An Australian special forces soldier has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
The soldier is the 39th Australian soldier to be killed in the conflict since 2001.
Defence force chief David Hurley told reporters in Canberra on Monday a special operation task group was conducting a disruption operation against an insurgent network overnight.
"The soldier was clearing the compound when an (improvised explosive device) IED detonated, killing him instantly," he said.

General Hurley said no other Australian or Afghan soldiers were killed or injured.
He said because the special operations mission was continuing, he could not provide specific details "without risking the safety of this young man's comrades".
The soldier was highly qualified with operational experience, he said.
"His commanding officer described him as an exceptional soldier who will be remembered as genuine, honest and dedicated," General Hurley said.
"His loss will be deeply felt by those who knew him."
The soldier's family have been informed and are receiving support.
"On behalf of the army and the defence community I offer my deepest sympathy to the soldier's family and his friends," General Hurley said.
"Our thoughts are also with his mates who remain in the field."
Personal details won't be released yet at the request of the Digger's family.
