A Price on Carbon - Immediate Results
Oct 19th, 2012 at 8:05am

THE carbon tax has helped to drive a sharp fall in the emissions intensity of Australia's power generation as coal-fired stations are closed, moth-balled or sell less electricity.

As Victoria's Yallourn brown-coal-fired power station became the latest to announce a production cut, experts said falling demand for electricity, more renewables such as wind farms and solar, and
the carbon price
were all pushing Australia's coal-fired stations out of the market, making generation cleaner.

Electricity sold into the east coast market
in the three months since the tax was introduced created on average 7.6 per cent less carbon dioxide for each megawatt hour of power
, an analysis of figures compiled by the Australian Energy Market Operator shows.

The decline in emissions intensity was sharpest in South Australia (16.1 per cent) ...

... and Victoria (8.7 per cent). In NSW it was 4.3 per cent.
The dip began in June, shortly before the introduction of carbon pricing, as the market began to factor in the change
.

Meanwhile China has stated it will not see a reduction in carbon emissions until 2030 and continues to pollute at a greater increase than Australia's entire yearly output....

Got anymore of that Carbon-Tax Kool-Aid? It tastes awesome....

Do you think that Alan Jones will be calling Tony Abbot a liar this morning?

But Mr Abbott was quick to dismiss the government's reading of the report.

"I want to scotch this myth that the Gillard government is interested in getting power prices down,'' he said.

"The whole point of the carbon tax is to put prices up. Every time your power bill goes up the prime minister has a smile on her face because that's the carbon tax doing its job.''

No Mr Abbott.  The whole point of the carbon tax is to put prices up FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATED BY FOSSIL FUELS.  There are other ways to generate electricity Mr Abbott.  That is the whole point.

THe Carbon Price is working.  Emissions are reducing.  Whyalla still exists.  A leg of lamb does not cost $100.

You have been telling the country lies Mr Abbott.

Andrei, you keep going on about China ... maybe you could join a Chinese forum and talk to them about it, and leave the Aussie forums to those who care about Aussie politics ...

Actually it has more to do with changing our economy to embrace the future rather than relying on dwindling resources that are becoming unaffordable and will eventually run out completely.
We will be able to take advantage of countries that refuse to change by flogging them our coal at over inflated prices while also making the necessary changes to keep our economy growing when the coal runs out.
Tell me whats wrong with that?

According to people like Andrei - the solution would be simply for China to divide itself into 4 independent nations.  North China, South China, East China, West China.  ANd POOF! all of a sudden China is no longer the world's largest emitter!  Just 4 new nations with per capita emission rates 4 times lower than Australia, USA etc.

This is why people like Andrei are generally ignored.

So you don't see the fact that everyone else is trying to reduce its emissions (the United States included) and China are making no attempt to reduce at all and will not do so until another 18 years time??

Are you aware just how much of the pollution today comes from there??

Because Australian companies now have to compete with Indian and Chinese competitors who are not hindered by this tax.

Read the comments of the CEO of Bluescope Steel on the effect on their business of this tax and the competitor edge they are losing.

China is investing more money in alternate energies than just about anyone else on the planet ... how can you say they are making no attempt? didn't your mother ever teach you not  to lie?

So..we cant lose..we flog em our coal while we use renewables.
We are at the cutting edge when the rising price of coal forces these countries to come to the party and we've made a fortune out of them in the mean time.
Whats the problem?

Chinese emissions increased by FIVE TIMES of the total reductions of the rest of the world combined through Kyoto.

Every country is trying to reduce - China has stated it will not reduce until 2030 at a minimum.

More Chinese suffer from emissions related illness in the large cities than every before.
Shanghai and Beijing are not constantly clouded in smog.

Why is it everyone else is trying to reduce but they are not?
Do we feel bad for them and just give them a free card to pollute?

The carbon tax is a waste of time if nobody addresses China.

25% of pollution above Los Angeles on a given day has come across the Pacific from China.
Fact.
