POLYGAMY
Sep 26th, 2012 at 11:24am

It's the natural order of humans.  Why do we comply with the unnatural imposition of monogamy?

Many dont. I was wondering the same thing last night when they were talking about how government legislates marriage. Who decided it had to be monogamy for all?

Monogamy reduces the many problems caused by undersexed males (which mostly falls under the banner of violent crime) who wouldn't have a hope in attracting a mate otherwise, but I'm not so sure it's indefinitely sustainable.

Becaaaaause...if we look at mating as a contract - swapping sex for resources - it becomes apparent that lesser males can't offer a very good deal.  What is more attractive in this sense - sharing a billionaire with 5 other women, or having a minimum wage worker all to yourself?  No contest - that's several hundred million $ vs ~$20,000.  I can hear the idelaists now - "but I don't care about money, I love my poor man with the heart of gold."  That's great, but can you speak for every woman?

Thus, without enforced monogamy females seek out higher status males, with the alpha males overseeing a harem of several women, while those at the bottom of the ladder get none.
But those lesser males still have urges that if not indulged, are expressed in destructive ways.  Monogamy is a trade off between men - alphas give up the official right to have more than one missus (though they still always seem to have mistresses don't they?) in exchange for relative peace from betas.

Many mistakenly think polygamy is oppressive to women, when in fact the opposite is true - it is monogamy that restrains their hypergamous instincts.

Well that would reflect very poorly on the standards of women.  You reckon this guy is getting all the sex he wants?

Can you please clarify exactly what you mean by that? Is it a one-way street where women use their sexual appeal to attract men with money?

How can it be a one-way deal?  Our species very survival is dependant on a mutually beneficial arrangement between the 2 sexes.

Put simply: Humans living things are driven by the primal instinct to reproduce.

Males generally want quantity - reflected by our potential to impregnate a huge amount of women.

Females genarally want quality - reflected by their inability to carry more than 1 mans baby at once.

One thing that needs correcting is that while money is an indicator of status (quality) it is not the ONLY indicator.

You know where it's at Wes...simple nature is true democracy.

Unfortunately, our so-called democracy does not reflect that in the least.

Some women want more than 1 man . . . . . why would that be taboo?

That's a little different to being undersexed.

Sometimes less is more. Perhaps lesser males might appear to be of poor value, but they could have other qualities which might be appealing ie less likely to be unfaithful; more grateful to have a woman and therefore more willing to please her than an alpha male.

Generally it seems that alpha males are needed more for procreation. Often women go by their instincts and not their logic when it comes to choosing a father for their future progeny.

By one way deal I meant is it overwhelmingly women exchanging sex for security (or resources) and men who give security in exchange for sex.'
