People join for a number of reasons SOB, but to kill people, come on.

Some do it for the thrill, the adventure, the travel, trade skills, money, and a bit of macho bravado.  Some like the discipline and the mateship.  Patriotism, sense of public duty and sense of just doing the right thing.

I have several school friends in the army, and some are out already, it wasnt for them.

As for joining to shoot someone, a mate had to shoot dead an Iraqi at a checkpoint who turned out to be unarmed.  He left the army straight after the tour was up and it haunts him to this day.  Doesnt sound like a man who wanted to join to kill people does it.

You really need to grow up.

BTW, we were sending troops to the Afghan region two years before Iraq.  Why would they join just to kill people in Iraq?

Do you really HAVE to be a dick? Seriously? Iraq isnt the only place where theres action and you know good and well i didnt mean just iraq.

Ppl may join for "many reasons" but when theres "action" going on (iraq afghanistan indonesia whatever) why join? Seriously its not to protect this country - why do it?

Not in australia.

Since you mention it though avram how is being forced to joint the military something to be proud of? How does it make you somehow "better" than  anyone else?

Serving your country in the military in the most hostile place in the world and keeping your citizens safe is the biggest honor we can have.

We feel very passionate about this and we do not have the luxury you do of sitting back and not being ready all times.

Even now I remain a Reservist to the age of 45.

I am proud to be so. Every one i know feels the same. I dont think you can understand.

I would also say I have met Aussie soldiers, off-duty ones in Tel Aviv and spend the night in a bar with these guys. Afghanistan posted guys too.

Very good guys, very brave guys and they deserve more respect than people like you give (known as sofa critics - making comments from the safety of your lounge).

No doubt just before the election Gillard will go to Afghanistan. In keeping with the governments support of the majority of the Afghan military and police and the intention to hand control over, after all it's why we are there, that the security for Gillard, and any other politicians, should be turned over to the Afghans...to show confidence in the process to the people in the services who take that risk every day.

Heh like i said i have seen more than you think but my point is that soldiers arent worth any more respect than anyone else. Of course there are true heroes but you arent one of those. Australia doesnt have any of those anymore either because the only wars we have are manufactured political ones. Anyone that joins up while we are doing these stupid "actions" is an idiot.

Well yes but who is Australia sacrificing too in the first place by being there?

If they were cheap points then you would be able to debunk them directly rather then attacking the people who make the points and that is a fact.

it is a terrible day for Australian troops and Australia, RIP,Aussie soldiers.
My biggest concern is I was all  for nothing, if we stay there we will achieve nothing, if we leave the Taliban will regain control. We should be out of there, should have been long ago. Anyone that thinks we can achieve peace there is a stupid fool , just ask the Russians.
