And so it continues...I heard on the ABC this morning that one bloke on the building sites in the dispute is paid $130,000.00 a year "to boil the kettle and keep the kitchen clean..."

We all pay big time for these lazy bully scum. The cost comes to us via the cost of goods. $130000 for a kitchen job. Dam, thats robbery of my money for higher costs of goods.

Meanwhile, Mr Setka's personal "rap sheet" has also been published today - The Australian newspaper lists nearly 40 convictions, including assault and criminal damage. The story also links Mr Setka to underworld figure Mick Gatto - who also speaks to Jon, and says Mr Setka's priority is worker safety.

can we assume if he drove his car at someone that was all in the name of worker safety???????

Its not slander if they are SOB.

He was arrested, charged and before the courts for assult and obstruction.

At the time Abbott made his speech he had a reasonable belief that they guy was in fact a thug.

Its not slander if its true, and the actions of this guy now further prove the point.

Abbott has no case to answer, but nice try.

You arent making sense. He made the comment BEFORE the guy engaged in any "thuggish behaviour". It doesnt absolve abbott from slandering @ the time.

Quote:
Mr Setka is suing Tony Abbott for defamation over comments the Opposition leader made at a Master Builders Association conference earlier this year.

Mr Setka claims he has been "gravely injured" by his public portrayal as a construction site thug.

I do not wish to be seen to be endorsing the CFMEU's or Mr Setka's actions, but I find it curious that certain posters are defending Abbott by talking at length about Setka's actions and words, and his association with Mick Gatto and yet no-one seems to have even mentioned in passing what Abbott said that sparked this issue.  Maybe Abbott actually did go too far and said something that was defamatory.  Being pure and innocent is not a prerequisite for being a victim of defamation.

Quote:
A leaked Victoria Police list of Mr Setka’s criminal record up to 1991 shows he was convicted five times of assaulting police. There were multiple counts of assault by kicking and resisting arrest.

This is a very worrying development.  Regardless of who we are talking about, criminal histories should not be "leaked" to the media or the public.  Is the source of the leak being investigated?

He already had two convictions and was before the court for a third.

He also had five convictions for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

ALL BEFORE ABBOTT SAID WHAT HE SAID.

Difficult to understand?

They'll only get him into parliament if he expresses an interest in matters parliamentary, Cods, just like they've appointed Brendan Nelson to head the Australian War Memorial because, in part, "he has an interest in  World War 2".

Kill the messenger?  If it was information that was publicly available, or that was available under the Freedom of Information legislation, you could say that.  I wouldn't see a problem with revealing it to a wider audience.  However, the report mentioned "a leaked Victoria Police list of Mr Setka’s criminal record up to 1991".  Are you suggesting that it is in order to leak highly personal information about a person's Police record to the public?  With a person such as Mr Setka, of course a number of matters would already be on the public record, but not necessarily all.  Mr Setka is entitled to the same privacy protection as any other member of the public.

A public servant or a Police officer can't just release information when they feel like it because they think it is in the public interest.  There are certain provisions in place to protect peoples privacy.  This is why we have the Privacy Act 1988 of the Commonwealth and the Information Privacy Act 2000 of Victoria.  I am unfamiliar with the penalty provisions in those pieces of legislation, but I think I would be safe in saying that anyone leaking information about a person's criminal history would leave themselves open to diciplinary action, possible dismissal and maybe even prosecution for a breach of one or both acts.

As to your comment as to me preferring "this type of person", I would have thought that I already made it clear that I do not endorse his actions when I made my earlier post.  I am assuming that you have a level of comprehension at least equal to that of a primary school student - but then again, I could be wrong.....
