Detention centres were being closed down due to the fact they were empty, Labor/Greens government has been building new detention centres to accomodate all these boat arrivals, It was Keating who gave us mandatory detention a fact the leftists tend to ignore.

Refugees are not disappearing.

They come on boats. Most come in planes. They are people.

Howard era racism did not make them disappear. We have a legal obligation to offer them refuge. Howard era dog-whistling tried to make people forget that. Children Overboard...toot toot.

But they haven't reimplemented the entire policy. Not even half of it. Just one small part - offshore processing. The current situation is really no different than prior to onshore processing, except that the detention centres will not be in Australian territory. Without TPV's and the other components that made the Pacific Solution so successful, Gillard is setting herself up for more failures.
