CLP wins the Northern Territory
Aug 25th, 2012 at 9:57pm

The Country Liberals have joined the ranks of conservative state governments across Australia by winning the Northern Territory election.

Surprisingly, the election looks to have been decided by the bush seats, which are unhappy with the Federal Governments intervention. You would have to say that Ms Gillard and her policies must have played a part as well. Wouldn't you?

Bess Price is a good chance of winning the seat of Stuart which is on a knife edge. Good luck Bess. What a novelty it would be to have Bess in the NT Legislative Assembly!!! Refreshing.

Congratulations to the CLP and Territorians for making the right choice.

Seems Australia is finally getting it right. Well done liberals. Dont expect or even be concerned that federal labor will have their head in the sand of what the voters in the states are telling them.

Well it looks like the Aboriginal vote has decided the NT election, which is very interesting. No seats have changed hands in the Darwin metro area.

The Labor cronyist NT public service is due for a good clean out. Some good public servants will be lost though, including former colleagues and bosses.

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

We're still paying for the Whitlam Government.

I predict a repeat of what happened when Howard was in government ... labor won at a state level across the country, and federally the libs just kept winning ... except this time it's reversed .. the libs will gain all the states, but be unable to pull of a win federally ....

State Labor are suffering from their own incompetence and the hatred towards Federal Labor

We have see each time an election comes up - state Labor continues to tell its electorate that "this election is about state issues"

We continue to see lefties like skippy and adel tell how LIBs are in trouble

SA and Tas?

So the LIBs have to win these two before the tide turns?

You are kidding right?

They need to lose everything before you consider the tide to be "turning"???

Why is everyone talking about the Northern Territory as if it is relevant to anything?

Its not surprising that a govt falls after 11 yrs in power..It may surprise a few people here but that's pretty much the pattern we've had federally and in the states and territories for a very long time.
An opposition would have to be pretty incompetent not to eventually grab govt after more than a decade in the wilderness no matter how good or bad the incumbent is.
Two terms seems to be the limit and after that whether its Labor or Coalition its all downhill from there unless of course they can rig some sort of gerrymander but even that's close to impossible these days.
Good on the CLP it looks like 2 terms for them until the wheel turns again.

Amusingly, the ALP Chief Minister didn't want the redhead anywhere near his campaign fearing she would cause more problems for him. Imagine what the ALP's loss would have been had the redhead made a few appearances in the suburbs of Darwin.

Parenthetically, the issue of a person's record came to light last night as I listened to the ABC radio coverage of the NT election. One of the candidates (non ALP) had spent time in the slammer for a crime. The ALP jumped on it and made it a big deal saying a person's previous record should be disclosed to enable voters to make a clear choice. It came to light that one of the ALP's candidates had a conviction for assault some years ago but it was covered over by the ALP boffins.

How very open and transparent our major political parties are. What a bunch of shysters.

As we know what typically happens is the opposition will claw back a heap of seats at the next election.
Labor or Coalition they never keep up with all the promises they make from opposition to get into power and so the hamster wheel keeps turning.

dont forget ACT a draw the last time round with the greens falling in with Labor as they do...and this town is a mess...

I have had the pleasure of telling one or two Labor members what I think of what they are doing to this town..it is now Parramatta on steroids.. I call it the L.A. of the future.. we are surrounded by a mountain range and we are covered in dirt......

as for climate change well I dont think this lot have heard of it...they are even building a 10 lane highway so I am told by a green member that even she doesnt approve of.... her words.. going too far..a joke really..

anyway best of luck to all those that like what they are seeing.. and like the waste and debt as well.

Good on the CLP it looks like 2 terms for them until the wheel turns again.

nice thoughts except in 2004 Howard won BOTH hosues comfortably.

Lynn

except of course the opposite is true. Australia has remarkably stable govt with govts falling in one term almost unknown.

you do know this is a TWO-TERM labor govt? I dont credit you with much, but the ability to count to two doesnt seem that hard.

lol cool. All the parties have to do is swap the leader before each election, then get john dummy here to state that they deserve an extra term because this is their first.

well lets put it in terms you might understand...

TWO TERMS as PM.

and the discussion was on GOVTS not PMs. Gillard was Pm for portion of the first term and so far, all of the second term.

So, you are wrong both ways of describing it.

No words can descrive the sheer jubilation, pride, joy and contentment that I feel at present. I am so happy that my Territorians have voted out this inept and incompetent government. Henderson was a tool and a gutless wonder who went along with anything that Gillard said. He NEVER stood up to her and he didn't even have the guts to campaign as a Labor politicians, which is what he is.

Good riddance. Just another appetiser for the federal election. So much for the election being a nail-biter. The CLP had won within 2 hours and received over 50% of the prmary vote alone. The only question now is how much the margin will be. 16-8, 15-9 or 14-10? Hopefully Bess Price and Frances Xavier manage to pull off Stuart and Arafura, respectively.

Matty, you're back! Are you here for a while?

We have a lot to catch up on. You must tell us about New Zealand. Was it as you expected? Was the ETS expensive?

Look, if you're interested in a safe seat, we'll need to get the ball rolling immediately. People are already queuing up for Liberal preselection. The competition is relentless.

Also, Sexy Beast has been asking after you. I'm not sure if he's in the party, but you're definately on his radar. This is a good thing - you want to get your profile out there. We need to sell your positives.

You've been to New Zealand, so that's a start. We might be able to hook you up with Foreign Affairs and Trade, we'll see how we go.

Thoughts?

Actually, i am glad the CLP got in.   I lived in Darwin for over two years and I reckon it is a difficult place for any government.  The NT suffered from federal intervention from both Libs and Labs - to try and correct aboriginal problems that are just uncorrectable.  We had the ridiculous banned drinker register, if you bought two by 4 litres of cask wine you had to fill in a form.  I hope the CLP can do more - I doubt it - but have a go anyway.  i am guessing little will change.   The NT receives more than it's fair share of Australian GST and Tax money - the most of which is for failed indigenous programs.

I wait with eager anticipation to see what the CLP do.  i can guess what it will be.  nothing more than what has been tried to be done already

Just watching the news.  CLP expected to win up to 16 seats with the biggest change coming from the bush areas.   Well good on ya CLP - this will be a delicious 4 years to watch.  of course the first thing to do will be to fire all the public servants, then contract out, then try to recruit from interstate, Lastly try and stop the exodus of all your tradies and front line workers.  This will be a good 4 years for Labor.

Hey cods, thanks. I will only be back until Thursday. I've been back helping with the election campaign, such as handing out how to vote cards and the like.

I am really hoping that Bess pulls it off. She's a remarkable woman and so far (at last check) she's 44 votes ahead of the Labor member. The Labor member held it with a 15% margin, so for her to be leading is great. Hopefully she can clinch it. The same goes for the candidate in Arafura.

The problem is, that you simply can't think, as Labor has, that you can just throw money at Aborigines and not even follow up and make sure that they're improving their own ways of life. In short, molly-coddling them hasn't worked. They need to stand up on their own two feet, and exert some self-discipline and motivation. Many Aborigines have realised this, and they don't like being taken for granted and don't appreciate being "looked down" upon, even if the latter is not intentional. You know that old saying ' You have to be cruel to be kind.

Based on what? The LNP have a 71 seat majority! Labor won't see government for decades and decades to come. I'ts not Newman's fault that Labor left the state bankrupt. I am not too familiar with QLD, but I know he was left in a bad way, to say the least. Abbott will have a tough job of fixing up Labor's mess when he gets in next year.

Then why do the still have an absurd (in a good way) lead in the polls? It's like O'Farrell. So many have gone on about how he's been a dissapointment and they regret voting for him, but the last time that I checked, the Coalition is still leading about 63-37 in NSW, one year after the election!

Yeah, it's working out so well for Queensland. Looks like they're already counting the days to the next election.

Based on the fact that many people in Queensland are already ruing the day they voted for Can Do.

Then why do the still have an absurd (in a good way) lead in the polls? It's like O'Farrell. So many have gone on about how he's been a dissapointment and they regret voting for him, but the last time that I checked, the Coalition is still leading about 63-37 in NSW, one year after the election!

It is called 'the sqeaky wheel gets the oil'

Since the left squeak so much, cry so much, they drown out the few legitimate concerns of others, which are very few.

This makes it seem worse than it actualy is. You can safely ignore the noise as the population wouldnt have a clue what the fuitloops are on about.
