It wouldn't happen in the US, because although they profess to be a Christian nation, I doubt that anyone would blink an eye if the punks came in and wrecked their sacred sight.

Does Obama decide what sentences are handed out for crime?

I've never heard of any leader that has over ruled a judicial sentence. Putin has admitted that the sentence was harsh, but he can't change the judges ruling on that.

Why not criticise the judge if you think there's a problem. It was he alone who determined the sentence, not the president.

Surely you would be against punks destroying religious icons Andrei.

They will appeal if they think the sentence is too harsh. Russia is a democracy after all.

You appear to be arguing that the right of a state is somehow more important than the rights of individuals.

Why are all the reports, including Putin's own attempt to demonise them, so devoid of details about what they actually did wrong? You are the only one I have seen claim that they trashed the church.

It is the role of government to change the laws where it is necessary. Putin cannot deny any responsibility for the rights of citizens by pretending it has nothing to do with the government.

I wouldn't advocate changing the law just because five girls were intent on breaking it. These girls have been widely condemned within Russia, and rightly so.

The Orthodox religion means so much to those people now they have democracy. They couldn't practice in the open in the old USSR and now they have the freedom to practice openly, they hold it sacred.

Pussy Riot are not innocent little victims. They were 100% intent on breaking the law when they rebelled, so they should be 100% prepared to take the punishment.

Before the church incident they had an orgy in the university and they assaulted female police officers by kissing them. All on video.

For some strange reason they must have thought they were above the law. The law is there to stop stupid people from doing stupid things.
