New Rule for both League and Union

No more goal kicks.  What is it.....a game for goal kickers, or a game all about running the ball?

When there is a drawn scoreline near full time, like the rugby league games on Friday night, there is always numerous attempts at field goals.

One of my best memories of the game is of Keith Barnes 10 yards past half way near the sideline a point behind and 2 minutes on the clock, all the opposition team would have their heads down. They knew there was no chance he would miss.

You had to see Eric Simms kick field goals to believe it. He kicked something like 86 field goals in his career. He kicked something like 5 in 10 minutes in one game. Eric was deadly accurate past half way not a long as Barnes but much longer than onyone the last 3 decades.

I was at games where Both Barnes and Simms made the crowd go silent not believing what they had just witnessed. They missed one.

I'd like to see penalty goals in union reduced to 2 points.  I wanna see attacking rugby, with tries being scored.  It's too easy, especially in international rugby, to just draw a penalty anywhere forward of half way and slotting the kicks.  It's boring.

I always thought Union was a great game to play but a horrible game to watch.

Teams give away penalties now to avoid having tries scored against them, imagine if the penalty was worth less.

Rugby League wise I reckon during 'golden point' a win should be decided by tries only.  During 'Golden point' all penalties should be differential and no field goals.

Rugby Union (not a fan mind you) would benefit IMO by increasing the points for a try and / or its conversion and decreasing penalty / field goal value down to just 1.  Introduce a sin-bin for professional fouls.  The sevens format is much more entertaining IMO.

I would scrap golden point all together - there is a great deal to be said about playing the other team to a stand still and comming out even at full time.

However on your suggestion I would agree that a F/G should not end the game.

I would go for a try to win on the spot but a F/G counts towards the total but play continues to full extra time giving the opposition the oppirtunity to score back or get a try to win. I would also prefer that at full time each side gets the point they earned and then play continues for a bonus point.

a non try scoring game can be temse to watch. One for the purists.
the game agaisnt the ABs was excellent.

champagne is normally better to watch.

I am ok with a draw, seems a fair result.

Anyone who finds the ABs boring knows nothing about rugby.

Originally planting the ball over your opponents l;ine was worth nothing, just an attempt to kick a goal. Hence the name "try".
