Baillieu backs down on NDIS.    Smiley

Date

Victoria has broken ranks with New South Wales and Queensland and agreed to increase its funding of a Barwon area-based pilot of a national disability insurance scheme. Premier Ted Baillieu announced that Victoria would contribute $17 million for a trial beginning in July 2013, and also spend $25 in a one-off proposal for a Geelong-based disability centre.

"I take the view that this scheme is just too important, too important to play politcal games with and I have never sought to do that."

The Premier said he'd sent his offer to the Prime Minister this Friday afternoon and expected it to be accepted.

How can he break ranks. Is the state now going to pay less or is the state going to pay the exact same as before conceding. In other words, has there been a deal done or he has just said, fine we will pay what you have always said we are going to pay.

Baillieu makes peace offer on disability plan

Breaking News Reporter

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu has written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard with a fresh offer of $42 million to host a state trial of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

This comes after several days of criticism from Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who has been calling on Victoria and New South Wales to contribute more funds to to set up trial sites.

After a Council of Australian Governments Meeting on Wednesday, Ms Gillard expressed her disappointment that trial sites had only been secured in the smaller states of Tasmania and South Australia as well as the ACT.

Ms Gillard has been asking that Victoria contribute an extra $40 million in funding.

Mr Baillieu said he had written to the Prime Minister this afternoon with the new offer, which would enable a Barwon trial site for 5,000 Victorians to go ahead in mid 2013.

The Victorian Premier told reporters in Melbourne it was ‘‘sufficient’’ to meet Ms Gillard’s requirement.

‘‘I take the view that this is too important to play a political game,’’ Mr Baillieu said.

The NSW Minister for Disability Andrew Constance is expected to address the media shortly.

The states shouldn't contribute to the welfare of their citizens?
Is that a neo con thing?

Do you know what the hell is going on. Is victoria getting a better deal now and can say yes. Are they getting the same deal and as the OP says, breaking from some liberal deal (defecting).

It makes me ashamed to see the free trade corporate greed, economic rationalist, anti protectionist  brigade using this as a political propaganda tool while those who understand that Australian citizens must legally be protected and put first just want to get it done...

Nope Im sure the disabled come first

come first, but not came first in this OP. Ideals come second to government finances. It is just that it takes a government that can shuffle finances to pay for what is more important, which is subjective.
