A police whistleblower who alleges a "Catholic mafia" including police covered up child sexual abuse by priests in the NSW Hunter Valley has made explosive claims that his office was ransacked while he was away on leave.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox told a government-ordered inquiry that in September 2010, on the day he started a month's leave, he was asked to handle a ministerial complaint regarding concerns about a "church conspiracy".

When he returned from leave he was told by a now-retired public servant that his superior, Superintendent Charles Haggett, and Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Humphrey, had got the keys to his office and searched it "from top to bottom, looking in every filing cabinet".

"You are kidding," an astonished Insp Fox told the public servant.

"Please don't tell them I told you," she said. "But whatever it was they were looking for, they didn't find it."

Insp Fox told the special commission of inquiry in Newcastle on Monday he had taken the precaution of locking the file in his safe because he was concerned that "something like this" might occur.

He described the action as "totally unprofessional".

He said that in his 35 years in the police force he had never heard of senior officers turning a colleague's office "upside down" to find a sensitive brief.

Insp Fox said other policemen including Troy Grant, a former officer who is now the state Nationals MP for Dubbo, had told him they felt they were being discouraged from investigating the clergy.

Counsel assisting the inquiry, Julia Lonergan, SC, told Insp Fox that Mr Grant had made a statement saying he was not hindered and had made no such observation to him.

"I clearly remember the conversation because it was the first time I had heard the phrase 'Catholic mafia'. I am surprised he would say that," said Insp Fox.

Commissioner Margaret Cunneen, SC, is concentrating on two priests in the Maitland-Newcastle diocese, both now dead - Father Denis McAlinden, who she said was regarded by many as a serial offender over four decades, and Father James Fletcher, a convicted pedophile who a judge said was guilty of a "gross and inexcusable breach of trust".

Insp Fox said a statement from a former altar boy who was a victim of Father Fletcher was one of the most difficult he had ever had to take.

He did not specify the nature of Fletcher's crimes but said they were "most horrid ... dreadful, dreadful crimes".

The traumatised victim had attempted suicide multiple times.

Insp Fox also alleged collusion by Bishop Michael Malone and others which he said had led to Father Fletcher being forewarned about his investigations.

He said he started to "seriously distrust" some senior police and ultimately pursued his investigations in confidence rather than logging them through official police channels.

"I didn't trust the police environment," he told the inquiry in the Newcastle Supreme Court.

Insp Fox said that at a meeting in 2010 he was told by Superintendent Max Mitchell, now an assistant commissioner, not to continue his investigations into sexual abuse.

Mr Mitchell and Mr Grant are both due to give evidence to the inquiry, along with other senior police and church officials.

The inquiry continues on Tuesday.

As of its launch on April 8, 2013 it holds 2 million records comprising approximately 1 billion words.

The Kissinger Cables comprise more than 1.7 million US diplomatic records for the period 1973 to 1976, including 205,901 records relating to former US Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger. Dating from January 1, 1973 to December 31, 1976 they cover a variety of diplomatic traffic including cables, intelligence reports and congressional correspondence. They include more than 1.3 million full diplomatic cables and 320,000 originally classified records. These include more than 227,000 cables classified as "CONFIDENTIAL" and 61,000 cables classified as "SECRET". Perhaps more importantly, there are more than 12,000 documents with the sensitive handling restriction "NODIS" or 'no distribution', and more than 9,000 labelled "Eyes Only".

At around 700 million words, the Kissinger Cables collection is approximately five times the size of WikiLeaks' Cablegate. The raw PDF data is more than 380 Gigabytes in size and is the largest WikiLeaks publication to date.

WikiLeaks' media partners will be reporting throughout the week on their findings. These include significant revelations about US involvements with fascist dictatorships, particularly in Latin America, under Franco's Spain (including about the Spanish royal family) and in Greece under the regime of the Colonels.

The documents also contain hourly diplomatic reporting on the 1973 war between Israel, Egypt and Syria (the "Yom Kippur war"). While several of these documents have been used by US academic researchers in the past, the Kissinger Cables provides unparalled access to journalists and the general public.

Most of the records were reviewed by the United States Department of State's systematic 25-year declassification process. At review, the records were assessed and either declassified or kept classified with some or all of the metadata records declassified. Both sets of records were then subject to an additional review by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Once believed to be releasable, they were placed as individual PDFs at the National Archives as part of their Central Foreign Policy Files collection. Despite the review process supposedly assessing documents after 25 years there are no diplomatic records later than 1976. The formal declassification and review process of these extremely valuable historical documents is therefore currently running 12 years late.

The form in which these documents were held at NARA was as 1.7 million individual PDFs. To prepare these documents for integration into the PlusD collection, WikiLeaks obtained and reverse-engineered all 1.7 million PDFs and performed a detailed analysis of individual fields, developed sophisticated technical systems to deal with the complex and voluminous data and corrected a great many errors introduced by NARA, the State Department or its diplomats, for example harmonizing the many different ways in which departments, capitals and people's names were spelt. RECLASSIFICATION ATTEMPTS THWARTED

The CIA and other agencies have attempted to reclassify or withhold sections of the US National Archives. Detailed minutes of US State Department meetings show that these attempts, which originated under the Bush II administration, have continued on through until at least 2009. A 2006 analysis by the US National Security Archives, an independent non-governmental research institute and library located at George Washington University, found that 55,000 pages had been secretly reclassified.

Recent developments and revelations about Benghazi put in a format easily digested by mainstream media viewers — a Top Ten list. Plus a special Benghazi report from Jon Bowne.
Much of the media and liberal establishment simply ignored yesterday's Benghazi hearings. They were content to see, hear, and speak no evil — which is typically the fastest way to kill a story in Washington. Others framed the proceedings as just another quixotic, partisan effort to hype a long-resolved story. Selling that template requires adherence to two fallacious assertions: First, that no major questions remain regarding the 9/11 terrorist assault on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya — and second, that no new information emerged from the whistle-blowers' hours-long testimony. The former claim is outright insulting. The latter betrays either aggressive ignorance or wishful thinking. House Oversight Committee Republicans' focused questioning extracted quite a few nuggets of relevant information. For their part, many committee Democrats were focused on unseemly efforts to attack, distract and smear — all employed as they cynically groused about Republicans "politicizing" the investigation. Cutting through the nonsense and dissembling, here's what we now know:

(1) Murdered US Ambassador Chris Stevens' second in command, Gregory Hicks, was instructed not to speak with a Congressional investigator by Sec. Hillary Clinton's chief of staff, Cheryl Mills. Hicks said he'd "never" faced a similar demand at any point during his distinguished 22-year diplomatic career. Smoke forces evacuation of White House press room

WASHINGTON –  Reporters and photographers were evacuated briefly from the West Wing of the White House early Saturday because of smoke from an overheated transformer in a mechanical room.
U.S. Secret Service spokesman Max Milien said that at about 7 a.m., smoke was seen coming from a mechanical room closet on the first floor.
"Early this morning, an electrical transformer near the West Wing malfunctioned and set off a smoke alarm in the West Wing," a White House official said in a statement.
"The transformer problem was quickly resolved. Electricity and personnel access to the West Wing has returned to normal," the statement said.
President Barack Obama and his family were not affected by the incident, according to the White House.
Journalists and others were evacuated out of "an abundance of caution" and the District of Columbia fire department was called, Milien said.
No injuries were reported and people were allowed back into the building about an hour later.
