The BBC have reported that an 82-year-old Australian entertainer has been arrested on suspicion of sex offences, as Operation Yewtree broaden their investigation into child sex claims against the late Jimmy Savile.

According to a police statement, released a few hours ago, an 82-year-old man from Berkshire, UK was arrested some time last night. The Met have yet to release the name of the individual involved.

Tom Savage, editor of The Daily Star newspaper, has tweeted that the man in custody is Rolf Harris.

Truth and transparency in the media.....why not?

Why are the media reluctant to release his name?

It's all over social media. We all know who the 82 year old Aussie icon is.

It seems that the British police are purposely delaying procedures. If they take enough time to investigate him and lay charges he will have died of natural causes......is that the plan? We can't bare to see the pain of exposure on his face?

Besides, it's much more cost effective to have a dead criminal, but I'm sure the victims would like to see him have his day in court.

Why hasn't Mr Harris faced the media to protest his innocence?

What Rolf Harris has or hasn’t done is not the point of this post, it is our right to know and the failings of the main stream media and their own self-censorship. The failing of the media is a topic this site has covered numerous times and will continue to do so.

Operation Yewtree was initiated last year after a flood of allegations against British TV entertainer and personality Jimmy Savile.

THE Australian entertainer arrested on suspicion of sexual offences remained in hiding yesterday having apparently moved out of his riverfront home in the country to live in an undisclosed London flat.
The 82-year-old showbiz star was interviewed for several hours until late on Thursday night by detectives from Operation Yewtree which has so far arrested 11 men in relation to suspicions of sex offences dating back as far as the 1960s.
He was bailed to reappear before police in May while officers conducted further inquiries. His arrest followed a lengthy interview he gave police “under caution” with lawyers in November last year which also followed a search of a property in Berkshire five days earlier.
Yesterday the man’s British agent was still not taking calls. His wife and a man believed to be his son-in-law were at his Berkshire home in South East England but both have declined to comment when questioned by media outside their gates.
The high-profile star, who News Limited has chosen not to name, was said by friends close to him to be “fragile” with shock over his interviews with police. He reportedly has been staying at a flat in the city in recent weeks.
Operation Yewtree was initiated last year after a flood of allegations against British TV entertainer and personality Jimmy Savile who had abused children and adults over a five decade period.
He was recently declared the most prolific sexual predator in the country in history with Yewtree now officially recording 214 criminal offences including 34 rapes involving many young boys and even terminally ill teenagers and other in psychiatric wards. More than 450 people have alleged sexual abuse against Savile.
While the Australian entertainer was arrested by Yewtree detectives, police pointed out there were three strands to the probe. One directly relates to Savile, the second relates to persons directly related to Savile’s crimes and the third, which the Australian man falls into, is simply known as “others”
independent of Savile and was created after the Savile scandal prompted a number of unrelated allegations to surface against high profile music, television and radio stars.
Among the high profile arrests so far are disgraced former popstar Gary Glitter and well known British comedian Freddie Starr. Starr has denied the allegations, and Glitter has not released a statement.

Not many desire to try out Fr Anthony Musala’s shoes right now. How one writes a stinging letter while the Pope assumes office, laying bare facts on the filth in the church and goes ahead to call for radical reforms is a reality too huge for the throat. You can describe him by any adjective in your mind. You can agree or disagree with him and you have the choice to either love or hate him. But perhaps, after a moment of reflection and soul searching, you and I might ask the question: What if this man is right?

The first time I came face to face with issues of clerical celibacy, particularly in the Catholic Church, I was a student of Julius Ocwinyo’s Fate of Banished, which is arguably the most authoritative Ugandan fiction voice on the same, especially having been written by a former seminarian. In there, I came face to face with a one Santo Dila, a Catholic priest entangled in an affair with a married woman. But that was only fiction.

Hardly a year after I shelved Ocwinyo’s novel, Musaala drops a bombshell and earns himself instant suspension. What follows? Testimonies by the public of priests and bishops siring children. One caller actually had to be stopped by a moderator when he called in Kfm’s Hot Seat show on Thursday and made sweeping allegations of a tycoon fathered by a deceased cardinal. During the same show, Ethics Minister, Rev Fr Simon Lokodo admitted he had, “heard of but not seen,” priests with children.

What does all this mean? A reasonable number of Priests have children. Implication? Those children are living a life of exile and captivity in their own land because their parents are subjected to fugitive life by Catholic tradition. What does this say about the church? It can sweep anything under the carpet but the nasty truth will once in a while pop out. The way it happened in the Vatican during Pope Benedict XVI’s reign.

Musaala actually thinks the men of the robe should marry. He thinks this will somehow check inherent problems like paedophilia, homosexuality and child siring. Certainly all these are of a global magnitude, whose beastly feet have even sneaked their way to the Vatican.

Yet we think; if he cannot be celibate he should pack his bags and go! If he thinks he can turn the tables of a religion’s age old tradition, then he must be evicted from the fantasy world. We might be right. Doing wrong should not be justification enough for changes to be made in the church. If some Muslims eat pork, it is akin to declaring a world war to suggest, let alone think of suggesting that the swine prohibition be lifted. If public officials steal money with historical genius, then we can declare corruption legal and like Musaala says, “have a frank and open dialogue” on the matter.

But come to think of it. Anglican priests marry. Sheikhs do. Pastors and other Pentecostal leaders do with equal confidence. Are we Catholics so holier than them that we had better stick to hiding our heads in the sand and choking with rigidity? For how long shall we do this? I am not saying anything. I am only reflecting on the question, what if Musaala is right?
