But What If My House Burns Down Mr Premier.

Cuts may create part-time fire stations

Date
    July 8, 2012

SHORT-STAFFED fire stations could be forced to close their doors as the service looks for ways to fund state government-imposed budget cuts.    Sad

Up to eight stations out of 70 in Sydney could be left unattended at any one time, sources suggest, with firefighters warning yesterday the unprecedented austerity measure would compromise community safety.

Fire and Rescue NSW is being forced to make savings after the Treasurer, Mike Baird, reduced its wages cap by $30 million over the next four years, according to Treasury forecasts. More than $5 million has been cut from overtime and temporary staff in 2012-13 alone.

The cuts equate to 260 staff - about 6 per cent of the 6900-strong workforce. But The Sun-Herald has learnt Commissioner Greg Mullins intends to fund the shortfall through a crackdown on overtime and absenteeism before redundancies.

One option being considered is temporary closures of stations hit by sickness or unplanned absence. Instead of funding relief staff, firefighters would operate out of the nearest station during that shift.

Fire and Rescue confirmed temporary closures were among the options being considered but insisted the service had sufficient operational muscle to move resources around the state's 339 stations without affecting safety.

A spokesman, Andrew Parsons, said: ''The commissioner and the executive are looking at a number of options available to reduce the impact of the budget. The safety of the NSW community and the service we provide always remains paramount.''

But the secretary of the Fire Brigade Employees Union, Jim Casey, rejected that. ''It will clearly impact community safety, response times will blow out,'' he said.    Sad

''How can Barry O'Farrell explain to someone whose house burns down in a suburb where a station is closed that the firefighters had to come from elsewhere? We will be holding the Premier accountable for this.''

This will worsen the bad blood between the O'Farrell government and firefighters.

While police, nurses and teachers have been ringfenced from job losses, firefighters have not been afforded the same protection as the other ''frontline workers''.

Firefighters recently forced the government into a humiliating backdown on plans to strip them of workers compensation conditions after hundreds of them went on strike, blockaded Macquarie Street and sprayed Parliament House with a hose.

Mr O'Farrell was livid at their actions, with police considering charges against the officer in charge of the hose. However, The Sun-Herald understands no formal charges will be laid, though the officer may still face an internal disciplinary hearing.

The Opposition Leader, John Robertson, said the community should not have to accept reduced emergency services for budget cuts.    Sad

The Labor opposition has also taken aim at the near halving of funding for advertising from $584 million to $320 million.

''Cancelling fire safety advertisements is a case of budget cuts gone mad,'' Mr Robertson said. ''These messages remind everyone from young children to the elderly how to prevent and stay safe in the event of a house fire.''    Sad

If they were smart they would close fire stations in safe liberal seats especially the premiers.

Close Roseville, Wharoonga (O'Barrell)  manly (Abbott) etc - let them feel the community preasure and voter impact, Undermine the Liberal feds as well just to add to the pressure.

Has the union explained yet why they let a house burn down when they were last on strike?

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

We're still paying for the Whitlam Government.

Maybe we could go back to the days when insurance companies had their own fire departments and only those with insurance had their house fires extinguished or like the Ambulance services you get a bill unless you are insured.

Maybe if we cut some lunacy out we might be able to afford basic services. Let's cut lunacy like this:

Quote:
MULTICULTURAL ADVANTAGE GRANTS PROGRAM

The Multicultural Advantage Grants Program will be open for submissions from all across NSW in August 2012. It offers an unprecedented $1.4 million in funding to help NSW tap the strength of cultural diversity by supporting multicultural organisations, services and activities.

The Multicultural Advantage Grants Program flows from an independent review of the Community Relations Commission’s former grants program. Community stakeholders advised that the grants program should promote community harmony, and provide direct financial support to strengthen the capabilities of grassroots community organisations.

This vital feedback has been integrated into the new grants program, which is comprised of three categories of grants:

Multicultural Partnership Grants will support partnerships and long- term projects between the CRC and not-for-profit organisations and other groups with an interest in maximising economic participation and the linguistic and cultural assets of the NSW population.

Sponsorship Grants will support events and activities that foster community cohesion and promote the benefits of a multicultural society.

Community Inclusion Grants will help fund organisations that encourage and assist participation by all residents of NSW in community life, with a particular focus on inter-cultural and inter-faith activities that bring diverse groups of people together.

http://www.crc.nsw.gov.au/services/grants

Wake up Saladin. Don't you realise that watching the Spanish community (and other 'cultural groups') poncing about in their costumes as the celebrate their national day (with our tax money) is more important than staffing fire stations properly.

Where will we find those budget cuts? Yes, we will reduce vital services. And where will we spend those savings? Yes, we'll devote it to luncay like:

Quote:
Community Relations Commission of New South Wales
Spending in 2012-13 comprises:

§ $10 million to advise the Government on community relations policy, provide
community grants and ensure all government agencies follow the principles of
multiculturalism to maximise the social and economic benefits of diversity

§ $9 million to provide professional interpreting and translation services to culturally
and linguistically diverse communities to ensure people have equal access to
government and community services.

Could someone report Saladin for making perfect sense. He has the gall to suggest we put money into vital services at the expense of absolute tripe and flummery.

So I'mphukingcrook, rejoice as you watch your house burn down. Rejoice in the knowledge that this year the >insert ethnic community here< will receive a grant to celebrate their 'rich culture' (FGM or marriage to a relative etc) underlines that richness.

Australia....you're standing in it.

The last time the fire fighters staged a major strike?  You mean in 1956?

You mean the house fire that they did put out, while they were on strike (and therefore unpaid), on their way to the protest? http://fire.nsw.gov.au/news.php?news=2125

You mean when they went on strike for the first time in 60 years, when O'Farrell tried to push through Workers Comp cuts that would have cut payments for on-the-job injuries by about 80%? Cuts that would have removed all travel from cover, including retained firefighters actually responding to a firecall? Cuts that gave better workers comp coverage to RFS volunteers than professional firefighters?
http://fbeu.net/2012/06/ofarrells-workers-comp-the-bullet-we-just-dodge/

Fortunately, the strike action worked and Firefighters and Paramedics were exempted from the cuts alongside Police/RFS/SES who were already exempted. Pity everyone else wasn't.

We do already pay a levy for fires on our insurance.

Well, that's hardly "the last time" is it?  That relates to the current dispute.

According to reports I saw, the fire was put out by two crews from Hurstville and one from Kogarah, who then remained at the scene until the arrival of the Aviation Rescue and Firefighting Service. Crews from Mortdale and Arncliffe, who were on their way to the industrial action, also responded, as did a fire truck from the training college in Alexandria.

They actually lost about one room to fire, not the whole house. They arrived 13 minutes after time of call, which is a pretty standard response time for any emergency service in a metro area.

The objective is 2 minutes for call handling, 2 minutes for station turnout and 6 minutes of road time, but depending on distance and traffic, road time could easily be 10-15 minutes. FRNSW used to guarantee to arrive at "90% of calls within 10 minutes", but they dropped the guarantee because they never managed to meet it.
