Indeed, Labor caused a structural (upward) shift in the price level.

Prices could come down, it will depend on circumstances at the time.

Economic circumstances.
And on removing the ETS, those circumstances would be...???

*tsk* Careful. When you quote a reply you should put your comments after the final [ /quote ] as I've now done in this corrected reply. Otherwise they get included in the comments of the person you quoted. Which apparently is a real bad thing and lolly will shout at you and tell you to bugger off. Try it! It's a hoot!!  Grin

Come on, Shane B, you know you want to say it. Prices are typically sticky downwards. So fat chance of that.

Went grocery shopping today ... I didn't notice any price rises ... was Abbott lying about that too?

But then again, I suppose I didn't go to Brumby's ... I went to Bakers delight instead .. they seem more honest to deal with ....

its a clever tactic. They were probably planning a price rise already and now they have a fall guy. you can hardly blame them for letting gillard give them an excuse. After all, it is not like there is a price authority that requires permission for price increases on the vast majority of goods and services. They can charge what they want and blame whomever they wish and no one can really act against them. I bet Treasury didnt factor THIS into its ludicrously low carbon tax living costs.

Whitlam had one.

You could raise your prices, but you had to JUSTIFY the increase.

And increasing shareholder profits didn't cut it.

Bloody good idea, it was......

it was WAGE and price control and it was an unmitgated disaster like every other whitlam policy. it was a last-ditch attempt to control inflation and was a dismal failure. All it caused was buiness failures.

Will the ACCC fine be necessary. Public shaming may well be sufficient.

If people must partake in the evils of bakery goods an excellent locally owned bakery is the way to go instead of a franchise.

A fine for misleading the public about the cause of the rise. They can increase prices as much as they like.

they might even find that a little difficult to fine them over. how many businesses increase prices and blame X, Y and Z even though that isnt true? almost all of them. ACCC is toothless at the best of times. in this case they have no actionable complaint.

My power bills will go up by 17.5%
yet from the carbon I use it should only be 13.5%.

The electricity companies are using the carbon tax as a reason to rip people off.

What do you mean by an actionable complaint? Is that a technical/legal term. Can't they act on the letter that provides evidence of the intention to mislead?

Quote:
If the ACCC finds there has been wrongdoing, it can issue warning letters, infringement notices of $6600 or take court action with fines up to $1.1 million.

The ACCC said that businesses were entitled to increase their prices as they see fit, ''so long as any claims or representations made about the impact of the carbon price are truthful and have a reasonable basis.''

The watchdog also encouraged consumers to shop around and ''think twice'' about carbon tax price representations.

Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury warned businesses not the "jack up their prices" and blame it on the carbon tax.

"This sort of behaviour is reprehensible," he told reporters in Sydney.

He said the ACCC - and the courts if necessary - would determine if Brumby's had broken the law.
