Raise Prices And Let Carbon Tax Take The Blame.

Watchdog looks at bakery carbon tax memo
July 4, 2012

The Age.

The consumer watchdog is looking into an internal newsletter sent to bakery chain Brumby's franchisees suggesting they raise prices and "let the carbon tax take the blame".    Shocked

The advice from Brumby's managing director, Deane Priest, revealed by The West Australian newspaper on Wednesday, says stores can make more money by blaming the carbon pricing scheme which started on July 1.    Sad

"We are doing an RRP (recommended retail price) review at present which is projected to be in line with CPI (consumer price index), but take the opportunity to make some moves in June and July," Mr Priest wrote in the June edition of Backmix, an internal publication.

"Let the carbon tax take the blame, after all, your costs will be going up due to it."

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it's making inquiries.   Smiley

"The ACCC would be concerned if any franchisor encouraged or induced its franchisees to make misleading price claims about the impact of the carbon price," the watchdog said in a statement.

"Businesses are entitled to increase their prices as they see fit.

"It is business as usual, so long as any claims or representations made about the impact of the carbon price are truthful and have a reasonable basis."    Wink

AAP is seeking a response from Brumby's and its parent company Retail Food Group.

The stock exchange-listed Retail Food Group has more than 1200 franchised outlets across the country including Donut King, Michel's Patisserie, Brumby's Bakery, bb's cafe, Esquires Coffee Houses and Pizza Capers.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said every business was under pressure because of the carbon tax.

"The truth is the carbon tax is going to impact on every price in our country because every price in our country embeds the cost of power and embeds the cost of transport," Mr Abbott told reporters in Adelaide.

"That's the whole point. If it doesn't hurt, it doesn't work."

Mr Abbott said all businesses needed to be "fair dinkum" when it came to setting prices.

"There can be no rip-offs and the ACCC is right to police any business that is threatening to rip off its customers," he said.

"But I can fully understand why every single business in this country is looking at its costs and thinking of how much prices have got to go up."

I asked my local takeaway if they were going to raise the price of their hamburgers by the full one cent. They said they'd considered it but decided it was too much bother. Instead they're tossing up between reducing the quantity of onion by a couple of rings or maybe reducing the quantity of sauce by three drops.

I'd agree,
But the ACCC is the same as ACMA.

Put there to look like they are doing something but as effective as a fly screen on a sub.
How else can you explain how a man can incite racial hatred & call for the harming of an elected official & still hold the right to broadcast.
As for the ACCC well they approved the petrol duopoly & wonder where the independents have gone.

its a clever tactic. They were probably planning a price rise already and now they have a fall guy. you can hardly blame them for letting gillard give them an excuse. After all, it is not like there is a price authority that requires permission for price increases on the vast majority of goods and services. They can charge what they want and blame whomever they wish and no one can really act against them. I bet Treasury didnt factor THIS into its ludicrously low carbon tax living costs.

And so when Tony Blabbit assures us he will remove the carbon tax, what pricing authority is going to force these businesses to reduce their prices? None. I wonder if the idiot Lieberals factored that into their ludicrous magic pudding of promises?

and those price issues will STILL be blamed on Gillard (AND RIGHTLY SO). she has made a monumental mistake with the carbon tax.

Indeed, Labor caused a structural (upward) shift in the price level.

Prices could come down, it will depend on circumstances at the time.

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

We're still paying for the Whitlam Government.

We, the consumers are not stupid though, so the ones who think they can get away with unreal price rises will quickly go under. Retailers need to learn from the businesses that have already folded, people won't pay your ludicrous prices, whatever lame excuse you give.

do you really think that price-competitveness has only just appeared? That began with the first cavemen selling clubs at a discount of his neighbour.

Whitlam had one.

You could raise your prices, but you had to JUSTIFY the increase.

And increasing shareholder profits didn't cut it.

Bloody good idea, it was......
