Study: $668b in spending has no effect on poverty
Jun 27th, 2012 at 3:54pm

The federal government is not making much headway reducing poverty despite spending hundreds of billions of dollars, according to a study by the libertarian Cato Institute.

Despite an unprecedented increase in federal anti-poverty spending, the national poverty rate has not declined, the study finds.

“[S]ince President Obama took office [in January 2009], federal welfare spending has increased by 41 percent, more than $193 billion per year,” the study says.

Federal welfare spending in fiscal year 2011 totaled $668 billion, spread out over 126 programs, while the poverty rate that remains high at 15.1 percent, roughly where it was in 1965, when President Johnson declared a federal War on Poverty.

US$668 billion is roughly half the size of the Australian economy - astonishing.

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

We're still paying for the Whitlam Government.

Globalization of Government has caused poverty, the solutions are very complex but until the real solutions are addressed the Government has to keep the Australian poor from falling behind because of its corruption and policy failures.  You cant do this while ordinary expectations of a working class job are non existent. Cool

Mr Obama is now known as the Green Stamp president.

Hope and change indeed. Change hands is about all.

It'd be about the same level, the only change being that the poor wouldn't have even what little social support they current get.

I'm loving all the people that seem to believe that government can actually legislate/spend poverty away though. Yes, let's solve a socioeconomic condition that has specific causes like lack of education, retarded tax system, racial and ethnic biases, political biases, and a generally piss poor economic future with more handouts!  Why fix the problem when you can waste tax dollars on stupid bullshit welfare programs instead of using that money to do something that might help people not be poor like jobs programs. We've got tens of thousands of miles worth of road and rail networks that need a lot of repair work, there are assloads of infrastructure areas that need repair or upgrade, and instead of a New Deal Mk.II we get two-thirds of a trillion tax dollars going up in smoke.

Also, why is the article (and some of you) blaming Obama for this poo?  He isn't the person that makes laws or drafts the federal budget.  That's Congress' job.

I think poverty is a statistical measure of relative wealth and is not linked to any real measure of absolute wealth. This is more about the impact on the distribution of wealth rather than the eradication of genuine suffering.

What about the $trillions the Yanks wasted on nuclear weapons &
the further trillions in other crazy wars?

The Yanks have terrible crime.
Just watch the COP shows on TV.
Their streets are like a war zone.
It's all caused by their political system which doesn't work for about
50 million of their people.
