A DSLR is the best - they give professional quality pics.
However - they are large & cumbersome to carry around.

I would recommend a Canon EOS 1100d as
a good entry level camera.

No DSLR here, as yet, although I'm considering purchasing one.

However, I do have an 8 MP Nikon Coolpix S210 'point-&-shoot' which
I got at a very good price a couple of years ago. It has great battery-life
from its cell-phone-style battery, and a 2gb SD card gives me a heap of
shots, or nearly an hour of video (with sound).

Resolution ranges from 640x480 up to 3264x2448, and it will take 16:9
format shots at 1920x1080. Videos are shot at either 320x240 or 640x
480. It also has a good selection of settings which you can modify to
improve your shots.

If a point-&-shoot camera is all you need, I can unreservedly recommend
the little Nikon (it is a 'slim-line' style, and is very small/thin).

Although it is now discontinued, I'm sure Nikon would still be manufacturing
an equivalent model.

I've compared point & shoot cameras with a DSLR &
they are just toys really.

Point & shoot cameras are only good because you can carry them all the time in your pocket.

The best idea is to have both.

That's what we got for our recent trip to the UK & Europe & the results are very good.

We got the 2 lens deal & the zoom lens definitely got some good shots!
