Current trajectory level of human carbon pollution is perfect ... if destruction of the human civilisation is the aim.

Some say about 350ppm maximum at the moment. Atmospheric CO2 levels have varied between 180ppm and 280ppm during the last million years or so. 180ppm during periods of glaciation.

The more important question relates to rate of change.

Given that life on earth has spent the last hundred million years give or take evolving in an atmosphere comprised of approximately 250 ppm or so, I'd say that is the ideal level.

I would think a rate which does not lead to an eventual temperature rise of 3 to 5 degrees , leave the world capable of producing between about 50% to 70% of the current world food supply and the resulting population drop.

Of course the earth of prehistory has a darn sight more vegetation (carbon sink).

Fossil fuels is that vegetation. When you burn it, you are releasing the sun's energy the vegetation absorbed while it was alive.

Just a left-field question to all the scientists - why IS there fossil fuels? In the great natural scheme that is Gaia - what is the point of fossil fuels (or what we call fossil fuels')? Soil formation supports future vegetation. Vegetation supports life (as food and as generator of oxygen). What's the point of coal and oil and gas?

What? You don't like a population policy that ultimately reduces the number of carcinogenic humans feeding on Gaia's breast? What kinda Green are you?!
