Is Gina's move on Farifax a threat to democracy?

Just asking.  Hmm..  Has Swannee been reading my post from last night on this issue? Frankly it appalls me to find my views in such close sync with a Labor acolyte......

BQ:-  Does this mean there is hope for Labor once it divests itself of the feminist idiocy and restores democracy to itself?
Shocked

Ditto to this post.

You shot yourself in the foot, once you added an anti female slant to it

The only threat to democracy, not that democracy exists anyway..
Is that a percentage of the population actually take the media seriously.

Grin My feet are a protected species....

The mention of feminism as an aside was a swipe at the concept that perhaps even within the dark confines of Swedish Sharia Labor here - there might be some light...since Buruvva Swannee stumbled for a moment there and talked some sense.... Grin

Ye-eess - but the THEORY (anyway) is that a 'free media' is one guarantee of a free society...of course - we all know that 'freedom of the press' can be a many-edged sword - and perhaps itself needs some more careful definition.

Hysterical historical footnote:-  I was once confronted in an ambush interview by a gorgeous young thing backed by a camera and stuff over an issue that was currently before the courts.  She tried to persuade me to speak since it was 'in the public domain'.  Sorry - not to me until it is heard.  'Freedom of the Press' - like the 'freedom' or right to gain political placing here - is not open ended - the press have the right to ask questions freely - which does not translate to a right to an answer.

Similarly the right to stand for election (elbow digs feminist adherents again) here does not translate to a right to be elected. Smiley

ADDS:-  AND the High Court has ruled that an 'expert opinion' - and as such is a journalist's view defined - must be based on fact, and pure opinion cannot stand alone.

Its not a threat to democracy at all. It isnt as if there is one newpaper in the country or that sydney is the only population centre in the place. If Gina controls editorial freedoms etc then the newspaper will go into decline. No-one really wants to read one-sided tripe and her competitors will flouraish at her expense. So no, it isnt a threat to democracy. It is just a threat to fairfax.

What newspaper does not have the same bias?
You know their is a monopoly.
People clearly do want to read one sided tripe, they have been doing it for decades.

Now now - no name-calling!  Let's restrict this street brawl to a few knives and Saturday night specials here...bit of eye gouging but not too much....

So GR is a threat to democracy (have to agree with PP here not really sure we have one...democracy not GR)...why?
Even if she bought the paper in toto and replaced the staff with those of her views.
If you had a paper that only printed stories favourable to the government would that be attacked as unbalanced and undemocratic?
So is it also undemocratic for a paper to print an expressed opinion if it is contrary to that held by the government? If you want to see unbalanced publication look at any government report (both Lib and Lab).
Or is the government's problem simply that of living in a free market economy? Because that is what seems to be the necessary implication. Not to mention an otherwise express restriction on free speech which would seem contrary to democratic ideals 101.
The government have a billion dollar major industry in telling us how good they are, advisors, spin doctors and PR people, all funded through taxation, putting out reams of favourable paper and how is that democratic. Show me a government paper saying "what were we thinking that was a c#@k-up and a half". They don't exist.
You want to campaign against people trying to influence your vote through print then get rid of those doing just that around polling stations.
