2 things -
1) The major portion of all power cost increases, in recent years, has little to do with the Carbon Tax.
2) Taxes will increase, whatever name/s you give it, taxes are set to increase. But care will be needed, to ensure that those increased taxes are spread FAIRLY across all sections of the community, including the top 10% or the outcomes will not be as anticipated.

aye smitty ...the entitled mindlessly taking for granted their on-going ease certainly know how to whine.
I look forward to the time when they really understand.

The carbon tax should have minimal impact , but leave it to the greedy rich, the entrepreneurs, the rip-off artists, the real liars, and the poorest will pay the most, relatively, ...just like the GST.
THIS is NOT the govt intent, and I accept that, the intent is just. Its the greedy a/holes who think they can do what they will that will victimise the weak and uninformed.

As it has ALWAYS BEEN.

The rip-offs just see an excellent opportunity.... and everyone who states that costs will increase, out of sight, are those who hope to profit.!!!

Lets wait and see.... the spin-drs have had a more than fair go, predicting the end of the 'world'.

I look forward to a quiet chuckle as the doom-sayer righties turn pink, then crimson, from embarrassment. Wink

It is very easy for the government to remove the income effect and keep the price signal.

That's right. And then impose the 18% carbon tax that Tony wants to legislate for because we will have asked for that one, will have voted for it and we will have shown we want it.

Of course, we'll also have to pay the additional costs of removing the tax on top of that. The costs that the energy suppliers were talking about. But that's only fair.

Oh... and don't forget the tax increases for maternity leave. I don't mind paying extra tax so that rich executive women types can stay home looking after their kids on full pay. No that's eminently reasonable.

Oh... and don't forget the extra extra taxes that Tony will want us to pay to compensate the commercial fishers. I don't think he's mentioned that one yet so I'm probably ahead of the game on it. But you heard it here first!

There have already been large Energy related cost increases over recent years of 20-80%, depending on where you are in Australia. The current round of Carbon Tax increases, for most of the general public, are actually relatively small on a net basis, after government rebates.

However, general Energy cost increases are set to continue, with or without the Carbon Tax, as the increases are being driven by Energy Supply shortages.

That said, there may be a short respite, in Crude Oil related costs, for a short period, as the GFC Mark2 bites deeper, until Oil Production shortages outweighs the GFC2 slowdown.

No matter what either major party may say, the Carbon Tax IS a tax, first & foremost.

The Tax is there to redress government deficits and whether it's called a Carbon Tax or something else by the Liberals, Taxes & government benefits will need to be addressed, as the local & Global Economy continues to spiral downward in coming years, as it has done over the last 5 years.

Above all else, the equity of these future arrangements, between the different parts of our society will need to be closely watched, to prevent unintended consequences!

and your comment re equity... needs consideration.

From my own dredging of the media scum, et al, I tend to believe that this 'tax' is more than fair, as it only targets major emitters..
Whether these major 'power players' are allowed to benefit from this new policy is really down to the people, ...and the govt adequately funding the ACCC.

I see in my local (free) paper today adverts warning of massive increases in elect. costs because of the carbon tax ... and touting solar power ...thats their line.!. No surprise really is it.? Given all the garbage that has flooded all media channels against the 'tax'.

All these prescient folks...... why didn't they warn us about.............??? Roll Eyes

The Carbon Tax won't hand back everything! It will hand back a reasonable amount to most of the general Public, NOT ALL & it will retain quite a bit raised via the business section. In all, it will be & is intended to, RAISE TAXES & therefore offset government Deficits!

This WILL have to happen & government benefits, in many forms, to all sectors of the community will also have to be addressed, as the Global Economic Downward spiral continues, in future years.

It should be noted that whatever party is in power in Australia, in the foreseeable future, they WILL face a slowing Global Economy and IT WILL start to affect our saving grace, THE MINING SECTOR shortly, most likely starting next year!
