tvs from the 80s

i really liked the way tvs looked in the 80s they had character and a delightfully slummy feel to them

...

they were the quintessential tv

forcing everybody to switch over their tvs was the worst thing the govt has ever done (ok not really but it was bad)

Go back a few more years and they are even more interesting.  Here is one from 1960:

No one wants those old CRT  TVs now.
I left my old one on the nature strip with a sign on it saying fully working TV
& no one picked it up even after more than a week.

We had one exactly like that when I was a kid.

I used to sit in front of it waiting for Romper Room to come on.

That was when we used to "turn over to a different channel"  LOL

I said that to a teenager recently (turn over to a different channel) and they asked me what I meant.  "Turn what?"

I had to explain how we had a knob on the TV that you actually got up and walked over to and then turned.  LOL

Yes, I'm old.

I still use my 1977 Thorn. Good as gold. Has outlasted about 4 other tvs.

Here it is, the Thorn 48cm:

I still have an old  colour TV/ Radio/ Cassette recorder from the  late 70's. The TV uses a 7 inch CRT and it will work on batteries or AC.  The TV part doesn't work now, but I don't want to throw it out for sentimental reasons. One day, I'll get it working again, although it will need a digital adapter to make it work.

Oh dear.  I can remember that too.....

I remember our first remote control telly, it had a remote on a long cord, and the knob would turn on the telly when you used the remote. It would not jump from channel to channel, but clunk around the dial, but we only had three channels back then anyway, 2, 7, and 9. I still loved having it, and got addicted to channel surfing at a young age, much to my dad's annoyance.
"stop pushing that bloody thing, before you break it"
I used to sit there in front of the TV at 5:59 AM, waiting for the first show of the day, my beloved cartoons, I even liked the channel 9 station ID that had a cartoon guy running down a hall switching all the lights on, to show they were ready to begin the days shows.

I still remember being p1ssed off one morning when instead of the usual programs, they just had aprinted screen saying that President Kennedy had been shot and out of respect, the mornings cartoons had been cancelled, so had nothing to watch.
I could not imagine any world leader ever being mourned like that again, they were far more naive days.

Yeah, what will they think of next!
Apparently there are rumours that the Japanese are working on a device that will allow you to speak to anyone anywhere in the world (if they have a similar device). ANd without needing to plug into anything! Just through the ether.
How mind-boggling would that be?!?!

PS.
I still miss hand-written books. We used to call them 'codex' back then. We all spoke Latin. Even old ladies could speak Latin. Not like nowadays.

People have to be fools to not want a working TV that they can get for free. Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

It happened again on September 11th, 2001. A show I was watching was interrupted because of the World Trade Centre attacks. It was either 24, Star Trek Enterprise or some other really important show.
