Bloody hell! are we going to use that tired old WWII blabber for the next 100 years? Is that all America has done in the last 65 years to beat it's chest for?

Maybe it's time you got into the 21st century. The war is done and dusted, history so to speak. We trade with Germany and Japan for bugger sake, were all good buddies.

Well, that is a pretty awesome accomplishment. And I wouldn't say it was a case of us saving you so much as it was a case of you being nice enough to let us hunker down a lot of troops, ships, aircraft, and logistics there while simultaneously helping us crack IJN cyphers and all manner of fun stuff.  With out Australia the entire US Island Hopping campaign concept would have been a good bit more difficult as Australia made such a perfect staging area for invading the entire South Pacific.

Turns out we do trade with both nations as well. We're not wanting bases down there or docking rights or any of that fun stuff because we're afraid Japan might start a ruckus again. We don't even really want it as a means to threaten China (you're actually to far away from China to be of use for that for anything other than parking bombers and refueling aircraft and we've got plenty of places to do that already).

Instead we'd like it because your neighbors in Malaysia and Indonesia make us a tad nervous and Western Australia provides a perfect position to choke off shipping routes between the Pacific and Indian Oceans (we're all about controlling the high seas).

And we bring gifts as well...

Let's say the US got to build an air base down there. We'd have to lease the land from your government (that's going to cost anywhere from half a billion to several billion over a decade in rent monies we'd pay you).  Then we'd end up hiring a lot of Australians for a lot of post services, providing hundred or even thousands of jobs to the local economy. Speaking of the local economy, now they get several hundred to several thousand US servicemen with money in their pockets and the only place to spend any of it is at local businesses. We'd also give an open invitation to the Australian military to come and use the post facilities for training, saving the Australian tax payer a lot of money by not having to pay for such facilities yourselves or move your military units to the US to train with us.

THen there's the really fun part about hosting a US military base.,the thing that effectively means your country never has to worry about being invaded ever again.  You're hosting a nation that operates the single largest strategic nuclear deterrent force in the world and that nation has a tradition of asking the host nation if they'd like a few nuclear weapons to hold onto under a sharing agreement which would make Australia a de facto nuclear power. Hell, you don't even need any new equipment to do the nuclear delivery mission since you've got aircraft in your inventory that are rated for the B-61 and B-83 nuclear bombs.

All in all, you get to never worry about being invaded, a bucket of money, you save money on your own national defense spending, and you might even get the ability to turn your neighbors into smoking craters if they get to uppity.  In return we get a military base in a very good strategic location.  It's a win/win.

The Malaysians and Indonesians don't make me nervous. When was the last time they threatened us?

If we didn't hanker after America so much we wouldn't be a terrorist target.

Quote:
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a series of naval engagements off the north-east coast of Australia between 4 and 8 May 1942. It was fought by Allied (United States and Australian) and Japanese aircraft against four different major groups of warships.

Some of the aircraft involved were land-based, but most were from the opposing aircraft carriers.

It was the first aircraft carrier battle ever fought, and the first naval battle in which the opposing forces of surface ships at no stage sighted or fired at each other. All attacks were carried out by aeroplanes. It is also the largest naval battle that has ever been fought off Australia’s shores.

The battle was significant for two main reasons:

it was the first time in World War 2 that the Japanese experienced failure in a major operation; and

the battle stopped the Japanese sea-borne invasion of Port Moresby.

For many people this was the ‘battle that saved Australia’..

Thanks for that Yanks... Smiley

The deterrent does not really have much effect in regular times because there is no one who really wants to invade Australia anyway.
But in times of world war, or mass dismay their presence will have no effect what so ever.
They will probably take their stationed troops out because its a loose loose. Not enough troops to make a difference so there is not much point in letting them die when they can come help the rest of the forces in Africa, Europe, Middle East, US etc..

You personally or your nation and its national interests as a whole? We don't view them as potential threats because they're actively threatening (if they were we'd just go ahead and slap the piss out of them a couple of times and that'd be that), we do it because the position they occupy, their political stability, and overall strategic posture indicates that they could present a possible threat and the best place to set up to counter that possibility happens to be your country (which incidentally is the entire reason why we're concerned about them).

You don't plan to fight the guy in front of you when you're the United States.  You plan against the guy that might get uppity ten or twenty years from now.

I wasn't trying to judge anyone.  I was instead explaining why our two nations have a lot of shared interests and why it is that the US is so keen on maintaining that relationship. We're two nations with a long history of friendship.  We've both a common language, a coom culture, and a common military tradition. We know that when the time comes our friends in Australia have our back, and all that we're trying to do in this case is show that we appreciate our friends and will be there for them no matter the threat.

What we're trying to accomplish is an overt reminder to the world in general, and various nations in the South Pacific and Asia in specific, that if they f*ck with Australia they f*ck with us.

Yeah maybe. But what do the actual instigators (the politicians) really think?

In an ideal world they don't think and instead trust the judgement of those that know better and just sign the damn paper work and write the checks for the funding.  The problem with letting politicians decide such matters in detail is those people's careers are short lived; a few span of years, maybe a full generation if they're lucky. When dealing with threats that last decades or possible threats that won't manifest for as long or longer, you simply cannot allow short-sighted thinking from people who are more concerned with winning their next election interfere. To do so is utter folly and a good example of why others work so hard to forge these long term relationships, so we are all better able to face the future.

Sic vis pacem parabellum.

Excuse me cods, chard and I were having a discussion without personal insult or attack, since we don't know each other from a bar of soap that seems the reasonable thing to do. Play the ball not the person.
