New telescope to be in South Africa & Australia
May 26th, 2012 at 10:45am

We are going to get about half of the new radio telescope project.
What a great win for Australia.

Quote:
"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

I am hoping that my company will be involved with
supplying parts & maybe testing of systems for this project.
This means jobs, jobs, jobs - & in the most interesting
science project since the LHC in Geneva.

Maybe this is Labor's trump card - yes science is political too!

We will be able to make high resolution photos -
not at light wavelengths but at microwave radio wavelengths!

I can't wait to see the photos.
It should be about 12 years away - the best & most detailed
photos ever made of the universe.

Yeah. I've been following this over on my other haunts. It will provide incredible insight into the earliest phase of our universe.

Hi Muso,
thanks for the link - it was interesting.
Lets hope that some of us will be involved in it.
