State of Origin
May 23rd, 2012 at 8:46pm

I think that rugby league bosses are making a massive blunder with State of Origin on three fronts this year:

1. No games should be played in Victoria as there is no Victorian side in the series (and never has been).

2. The matches should be played on a weekend, not right in the middle of the week when most people have to work the following day.

3. The week of the State of Origin should be a bye for all clubs, so that those teams that have multiple players representing their state are not unfairly disadvantaged when playing against teams with few or none on representative duties.

The decision to award a try to Greg Inglis in the 73rd minute is nothing short of disgraceful. Radio and television commentators I was listening to at the time were all in agreement - Inglis dropped the ball and it should not have been a try. The standard of refereeing in this series opener had been - until that point - a major disappointment. Following that decision, I turned off the television. I just couldn't stomach the blatant bias against NSW from the referees. I realise that everyone makes mistakes, but the video referee presiding over the game tonight should be sacked, never to hold that position again. A blunder of that magnitude when the correct decision to be made was crystal clear is just not forgiveable.

The Try and the send off were probably two of the worst decisions in Origin history.

The try - I agree. The send-off, I am not so sure. He did run over and come in with a swinging arm and closed fist. Can't have that but perhaps being put on report might have been enough.

The NRL need to quit having Origin games in Melbourne.  Victorians just aren't interested in the game.

The Inglis try was a joke and so was the sin bin.  There was easy half a dozen that should have been binned.  Geesus such a close match was swung by crap decisions... Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

Big Mal in his press conference reckons Inglis's try was fair  Grin Grin.....I wonder what he would have said with the boot on the other foot...??? Sad

It was about 15 on one at the time and the guy who started it only got a mild slap on the wrist.

I have seen origin matches where if it was ruled to that standard all players on both teams would have been sent off.

I agree that Origin games should not be played in Victoria, but disagree that they aren't interested in watching the game down there. It was a sellout crowd at the game last night and I suspect that is why (or one of the main reasons) the game was played there.

Considering NSW have had one sell out in about 6 years i am amazed that Melbourne doesn't get a lot more games.

Wednesday is the traditional day for Origin, i was at the first game Wednesday night great feeling, oh and most importantly it is a ratings bonanza so they won't get the money for it on a weekend.

Ask yourself, if the incident had happened in general play what would it have been? I say it would have been play on six to go, it was a try or it was a penalty try for kicking in danger. Either he played at it in defence of the try and it was legal or he was lashing out and it was ilegal.

The bin was justified so long as that now stands as the benchmark for the series. Jennings ran 40 mtrs and then threw a clear punch with intent. At any other level he would be rubbed for six weeks, it was a lame attempt by an out of form player.

I see the players said it was a very fast game, it looked slow and QLD looked to struggle for most of the game, NSW were the better team but between some poor decision making in their halves and the joke they call a coach they will struggle to win. Stuart was disgraced as the Australian Coach with an outburst of bad sportsmanship and should never have coached at first grade level again

They had me worried a bit, but in the end we pulled through. I watched the whole thing in a bush pub. (Probably the last time for me in Moura.) They are always the best for atmosphere.

Fair enough but clubs should get a percentage of gate & broadcast rights payments per representative player that are unavailable for club games due to origin.

It would have been a simple knock on and a scrum with a NSW feed.

No way , totally disagree.   He should have been placed on report and dealt with by the League judiciary.

This Ref decision arguable effected the result.  Take a man out of the defensive line in the Origin just before half time and it was a gift 6 points.  Stupid and biased decision. Angry .  The guy that threw the ball should have been binned as well as all the other guys that threw punches.

I watched last night's game at the pub, it was packed.  Last year it was empty.  There's alot more anticipation that NSW are back and competitive.

I'm looking forward to the next games as long as the Refs have a trip to Specsavers in the mean time... Cheesy

I thought the ref had a good game.

the NSW ran in from 30 M away and threw a haymaker - have a rest mate.

the ball was kicked from Inglis's hand - which is illegal.

We won, NSW lost. It was a good game.

Yeah, have a gloat but It wouldn't be the Origin without a 'blue' (no pun intended) Smiley and last night's was pretty tame anyway.  Yes, as I said the League should penalise the bloke but not the team.  Put him on report and suspend him.

No the point is that both teams make the sacrifice every third year alternately and it is in the interests of the game as a whole. That NSW always has a pathetic whinge about it show everyone exactly why they are struggling.

This is already in discussion. It has been put forward for debate in the lead up to the next media negotiation, both paying bonuses to players and compensation to teams who loose players to origin. Interesting that this attitude that the club matters more than state or country is what killed it in the AFL. NSW selfishness will kill Origin.

Rubbish, it would have been a penalty to QLD for kicking in danger. Roll Eyes

For fighting yes or any normal incident but that was a total brain explosion. He ran in from distance and threw a punch with intent to injure. It was a Les Boyd moment.

NSW need to be loyal to what is an excellent team that can win this thing. There biggest impediments are their attitude to difficulty, team spirit and the idiot Coach. I see he was verbaling Harrigan today. He has no honor.

There is NO WAY this was kicking in danger.  Inglis just spilled the ball.

Nothing like Billy the Skid Slater from the 2008 GF.

QLD are due for a few dud decisions, maybe one will cost them the series huh.... Wink
