Bludging manufacturers bringing migrants
May 20th, 2012 at 2:29pm

A friend sent me this posting of a job that appeared overseas. This is how Oz companies feel they have to compete with the emploment practices of the mining company recruitment companies.

Because the Arbitration and Commision is gone and wage competition is used as a mechanism for competitiveness in the marketplace - hence a devaluing of Ozun workers value in the marketplace fierce competiton forces Oz businesses to import low-paid workers (strike-breaker scabs in years gone by) to allow them to pay low wages to trades people outside the resource sector. This is legalized slave labour. The arbitration Commision in the past prevented this by removing wages from the competitiveness framework by delivering to ALL companies irrespective of company size a level playing field when it came to quoting for work.

In comparison the recipient of the 457 visa is contractually obligated to remain with the "sponsoring employer" for the duration of the sponsorship is it the equivalent of an indentured slave labour forcing the wages of city and provincial township tradesman to leave the city for resource jobs to simply survive so they can afford to pay the bills for a family - even if they'd prefer to stay in the city they simply can't afford to. They must work in the mining sector to survive.

If these Oz companies simply understood there are some really keen kids who would love the oppurtunity to move to the country and take up an apprentceship, they would quickly solve their employment problems, and provide Ozun kids a future through employment as a tradesperson. Instead they choose to kill the goose.

So much for the of giving indig kids from the bush a go?

This is one of thousands of companies that dont advertise in Oz for tradespeople - they just 457 visa them under the guise of not enough tradespeple being available. The truth it seems is that they just don't want to train future tradespeople, or be part of paying decent living wages for tradespeople. If you think 32K pond is a fair wage for a Welder fabricator ask your next waitress or caffe latte technician what htey get paid for doing a two day course in Food and Hospitality and compare them. You'd be shocked to know the figures.

Here's the advert link for the job, the extraxct from the page and another for the company recruiting overseas.

So they dont even bother advertising in oz? Ridiculous. In fact i know someone who would be qualified for that job, Yup right here in oz. And he would prolly work for peanuts not enough to live on too just to not be doing what hes doing now.

The whole Skill Shortages Reports is a complete an utter fabrication by the various industry associations. The right-wing neo-conservative Australian Manufacturers Association along with most of the industry lobby associations are the equivalent modern day slave trader advocates of the tobacco groups in the south of america just prior to the Civil War in the American Colony. They promote the idea of low wages through slaves. It is not commonly known but just like the 457's that are parachuted into to contan wage grow (so much for free market advocacy huh?) the slaves of the carrabean and the south of America had property rights, wages and contractual agreements of indenturing to obtain the right of "a free man" just like the 457's of today.

The only time we hear complaints about 457's coming into Oz is when it threatens shiny-arse midde managers and executives. My dream is to have the oppurtunity to contract my share of taxes that I pay to administrate a cheaper and more efficient PS in India or China....  Then perhaps we might see a bit more protection for workers and consequently manufacturers here in Oz.

More irony, in a few years time when some smart young thruster gets the idea to prefab and flat pack what this company is manufacturing, they'll complain and ask the (probably Lib/Nat) future government for tax concessions to help it compete with overseas manufacturers......... All the while they have been acting as agents of their own destruction......

Someone started a thread somewhere on here saying they were advertising for skilled construction workers from Thailand. How absurd is that? The construction industry is coming to a standstill and we call for 457 visa people to take jobs.

Speaking of flat packing in the manufacturing industry. We lost the ship building industry because we didn't keep up with the new building methods and techniques.

The number and quality of taxi drivers in Brissy through the 80's spiked dramatically after Evans Deakins shut up shop. I can't speak for whats happening in the rest of Oz - but my impression of the current dilemma faced by many ofter 50 welders and boilermakers is they refuse to work for less than someone who pours the local short black or a newly graduated BSSc. It is more a case of standing on principle of fair days work for a fair days pay. Not one of them begrudges what the food and beverage peeps get - just they know they have a vocation that has taken them a lifetime to acquire and they'd prefer to treasure it's worth by themselves rather than have a business earn untold amounts of profit off their backs and be paid a pittance for it in return.
