Yeah. Helmets. Its all over the murdoch media tonight they want to do a "study" of head injuries in football. I betcha this is about helmets. Yank armour. Also my flatmate is all for helmets for surfers! Yeah. Helmets. How about wrestling and boxiing? They hit their heads too. Hmmm . . .

Amateur boxers do use helmets, and there is no striking involved in wrestling so little risk of head injury.

But I get your point.

And no, I can't abide any more compulsory coddling.  If you want to wear a helmet go for it, but we don't need yet another petty law "for our own safety".

studies suggest helmets in sport increase the incidence of damage.

With a helmet on, a bonehead athlete is happeii to use his head as a battering ram.
With a helmet on, boxers take MANY more punches before they are knocked down.

It would also wreck your balance when skateboarding or surfing imo.

Maybe just until you get used to it - although as I have never been on a surfboard or a skateboard, that's only a guess on my part.

I don't know how common this sort of injury is, but a boyfriend of one of the girls I went to school with had an accident surfing (about twenty years ago now but, for the purpose of this discussion, that doesn't really matter).  He came off his board in a heavy surf, the board went up in the air, came down and hit him on the head.  Part of his skull was broken and he ended up having to have a metal plate inserted where the bone had been smashed.  He was fortunate not to end up brain damaged or dead.

Sure God created man before woman. But then you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece.

If you saw the four corners episode on Monday it is all about repeated concussion and how long it takes to recover from concussion. Also what the long term effect of repeated concussion are. Helmets in American NFL were identified as a major problem.

You left out cricket, baseball & field hockey?

I've played all at one time or other.

They're compulsory in baseball and optional in cricket when batting.

Can get a mite warm under the helmet playing cricket in mid-summer.........but I was rarely out there long enough to raise a sweat.

Mind you I got my best score the first time I wore one....it was like I could see the ball earlier or some thing but that soon wore off.. Grin

As for hockey.....a female player was killed just a couple of weeks a go after being hit in the head.

I saw some show the other day where a guy went mountain climbing in canada and he had to wear a helmet and all the other mountain climbers wore helmets. Seems a bit silly to me since if you fall off a mountain I doubt a helmet is going to do much.
