Would sinking money into public housing be a vote grabber? I doubt it, not in the era of ME, ME, ME.

That's right, they sit empty because no one wants to pay the massive rents they charge.

The media is always squawking about lack of housing, but there is plenty of housing, just not affordable housing.

[Why can't the homeless use the stadiums, they have roofs, showers and toilet facilities. They can either be transported by bus to community centres when the games are on or alternatively stay there and watch the game.

By the same token, why can't they all stay at your place?

That would be fine, but since I have an average three bedroom house, they won't all fit.

Any more clever ideas wesley? You're as smart as Manly council.

Now why can't the homeless stay at the multi million dollar state of the art stadiums?

Because if you want those multi million dollar stadiums to have a lifespan of longer than a month, you don't open it up to all and sundry, especially when a large proportion of them are mentally ill.  A good proportion of the homeless are homeless, not becasue the system has failed them, but because they're too mindfked to hold down a house, a job, a life.

Have you worked with or had any meaningful conversation with a homeless person/people?

Have you read any peer reviewed societal journal articles about homeless people?

Could you say that you understand the nature of homelessness in Australia?

as disturbing as it is, it is not wrong. Ask yourself how a society that gives welfare to EVERYONE can possibly have homeless people. They CAN afford accodomatino and food yet somehow still dont. it is a complex equation but there are a lot of homeless out there by choice (dont understand that personally!) and a lot who are mentally ill as well as a heap of drug addicts and others. It is not the system that is failing them as much as it is a symptom of human failing - which will never be removed.

and you missed the example of a homeless person being given CHEMO for cancer. I can think of a lot of countries - first world ones - where they would not get treatment at all.

If they receive the dole they may not be able to afford accommodation. They may not receive the dole though. You get cut off if you dont do certain things or do other certain things.

You know nothing about the homeless. You put the blame back on the homeless because you are embarrassed to admit it is the government and societies problem not theirs.

If they all have mental illness why are the numbers of homeless growing at such a rate? Such a dramatic increase in mental illness all of a sudden, I wonder why?

Do we have a big increase in alcoholism and drug addiction to cause such a dramatic increase in  homeless?

Manly is having a problem with homelessness, so much so that they need to provide wheelie bins for them, the lockers are full up. Does Manly attract the mentally ill for some reason?

Did all the homeless people in the Great Depression become homeless because of a mental illness?

Does homelessness necessarily equate to mental illness?

What percentage of the homeless would have a mental illness?

exactly my point as well. A lot of homelessness and almost all of the long-term homelessness is in part, by choice. It is a complex issue but almost never about a shortage of actual money or accomodation. It is a social problem rather than an economic one.
