...and while I think of it - how are you going with that info you were getting for me angeleyes? Found it yet?? Where do I go to find a good people smuggler? "Indonesia" is not an acceptable answer.

Deary me Gist, here was me giving you credit for having half a brain.

Check out the numbers in the box under Humanitarian Program grants by category 2006–07 to 2010–11 re how many we take per year. You are ok with numbers I take it.

The leftards here would be lucky to have half a brain between the lot of them.

I reckon MOTR owes you a hundred.

Yep, quite comfortable. We're obliged under our international agreements to take people who arrive on our shores (whether by plane or boat). We're under NO obligation to take people overseas. Read it, it's in that same fact sheet. I even quoted it for you above.

If you want the overseas numbers to remain constant then you'd best show more support for asylum seekers.

If you understand numbers you would see that when the ILLEGAL numbers are up the humanitarian numbers go down keeping the TOTAL numbers close..

2006/2007 ILLEGALS 1,793. Refugee 6,003.
Special Humanitarian (offshore) 5,183. Total 13,017

2007/2008 ILLEGALS 2,131. Refugee 6,004. Special Humanitarian (offshore) 4,794. Total 13,014.

2008/2009. ILLEGALS 2,492. Refugee 6,499 which includes 500 one of places for Iraqis. Special Humanitarian (offshore) 4,511. Total 13,507.

Do you see a pattern emerging here? ILLEGALS go up, genuine refugees and special humanitarian come down.

MOTR has packed it in. You best as well Gist.

I'm looking at it. The number of refugees we accept from overseas has remained at 6000, totally unaffected by the rise in the number of onshore applicants.

Quite right, thanks for that correction MOTR. I'm looking at the SHP row. Damned confusing.

Regardless, if angeleyes wants the numbers in any category to remain steady then she should lobby the government.

I certainly haven't packed it in. You realize the onshore number you are referring to includes all asylum seekers, irrespective of whether they arrive by boat or plane.

Think you missed the humanitarian refugees. They are the ones with reducing numbers to allow for the ILLEGALS.

While you are checking that also check the totals. You do know what totals is? That's the BIG number you get when add the smaller ones together.

You can try and explain that to Gist as I can't be bothered.

Oh for heavens sake. Check out the total numbers. ILLEGALS go up humanitarian come down. Totals remain static.

That's it, I'm out of here.

My dog learnt to sit and stay quicker than you and Gist are capable of working out the numbers.

So your argument is that those who receive special humanitarian visas are refugees. Is that correct? I can clearly see your point, but it is incorrect to say that refugees processed onshore are taking a place of genuine refugees when those who apply for special humanitarian visas would have applied for refugee status if they had qualified.

Geez! It's in the document YOU linked to in this very thread. It says:

Quote:
Special Humanitarian Program (SHP)—for people outside their home country who are subject to substantial discrimination amounting to gross violation of human rights in their home country, and immediate family of persons who have been granted protection in Australia. Applications for entry under the SHP must be supported by a proposer who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, or an organisation that is based in Australia.

These are people who are NOT refugees! I'd suspect that a lot of them are families of people who have been accepted as refugees, although I am guessing on that point.

I do admit though, it is confusing.  Sad

This is what the discussion is about.

If we have 6,000 illegal boat people in a year that is 6,000 less GENUINE refugees we take.

That is not correct. The number of off shore refugees we accept is determined independently of the onshore program. It's a simple point that is probably hard for you to accept because you are so frequently told they are queue jumpers. Well, they are not.

This is why Abbott's spot on with his 'turn back the boats' wheeze: these boats are not under the flags of the asylum seekers' countries but under Indonesian flags.

In other words, we may be obliged to take people fleeing their own countries but we are certainly not obliged to take country shoppers 'fleeing' Indonesia.

But you gits and ches and nairbies and dickoes and prickoes are all too stupid to comprehend anything as basic as this. Carry on regardless.i

Ahhh... Sorrel... the herb of choice when it comes to rabbit feed.

Wrong sunshine. Under Sorell logic, anyone that doesn't arrive on a boat or plane from their home country is unacceptable. But of course, that's rabbit-food-think.

In fact (if you'd paid attention to the discussion thus far) you'd have seen that we are obliged to accept refugees who arrive here are, regardless of how they arrive.

Do focus on this thought. Go over it repeatedly through the night. Eventually it may sink in and you'll be that little bit better educated.
