Council rates to increase due to Carbon Tax
May 5th, 2012 at 12:37pm

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-05-05/city-councils-warn-of-carbon-tax-rate-hike...

Ratepayers in the largest city council in Australia have been warned that rates will rise as a result of the carbon tax.

The Federal Government yesterday released the official list of the 250 biggest polluters that will pay the tax.

The councils of Brisbane, Wagga Wagga and Armadale in suburban Perth are on the list alongside miners BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

The issue is causing a new headache for Brisbane Mayor Graham Quirk, just a week after he was re-elected as head of Australia's largest council.

Mr Quirk says he resents the Government's decision.

"It is not just. It is not fair to the ratepayers of Brisbane," he said.

He says the carbon tax will cost the council an extra $50 million over the next four years and that means rates will rise.

"I have no option in relations to this, it will be passed on," he said.

Mr Quirk says he is angry the Federal Government has ignored the city's efforts to offset its emissions.

"I resent this because we have done more than any other government in Australia to reduce our carbon footprint, we have been very proactive," he said.

Wagga Wagga City Council, in the New South Wales Riverina region, has also been included on the list.

Councillor Gary Hiscock says he is not surprised because the council area takes in a large landfill.

But he hopes it will not affect council rates, as $660,000 has already been put aside for the tax.

"We have budgeted for it, we don't want to unnecessarily put fees up for the community, but it's a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment," he said.

"If we can reduce our carbon emission from our waste management centre, it shouldn't have too much of an impact on our ratepayers."

Oh Dear here we go again with the Maqqa fantasy land. Brisbane i don't know but in NSW they can not simply just raise rates. They are getting 3.6% this year across the board, if there are special circumstances they can apply for a special variation. This is done with community consultation so no rates are not going to rise any different to normal, DER Cheesy Cheesy

Now fee's for particular services such as rubbish fee's yes these may rise because they make emissions, but then again maybe it will inspire some of these lazy councils to pull there finger out and implement rubbish systems such as the one the mid north coast uses where all rubbish is either recycled, put through the digester and made into compost or methane for power generation or some that is solid waste(no emissions)goes to land fill.

50 MIllion over 4 years?  I hope the ratepayers in Brisbane ask for some proof of that before they fork out that much extra in rates.

Interesting to compare the reaction of the two Mayors!  One will just pass it on without any attempt to minimise any raise.  The other is doing all they can to do the opposite.

So when is Brisbane Council going Green, to avoid the carbon pricing.

If the hard righters don't know how, then Brisbane rate payers, if they would like cheaper rates, vote Greens next time around.

Same as all other councils.

That's right. If you don't like your council putting up your rates vote Greens next time, they'll certainly cut the filth and the carbon tax, although I suppose it would be hypocritical after bad mouthing them for the last three years, or you could always just live with the extra costs  Cry

Its just the same old neo con mentality...ignore the issues and hope everything will go away.
I have a feeling Queensland will need a lot of rebuilding after Newman has finished with it

Yes.

Carbon Pricing has been on the horizon since Margret Thatcher told the hard righters about it.

1980's ???

Why didn't Newman reduce Brisbane's Carbon Pollution Footprint.

He does know about AGW and the massive negative effects approaching Qld, doesn't he?

Action against CO2 pollution has been on the cards for decades and the carbon tax was announced after the last election and both Howard and Rudd went to an election promising an ETS so Newman did know it was coming.
Most councils and businesses have been working on reducing their carbon footprint for quite a few years so what was Campbell Newman doing about it?

Perhaps councils should stop whinging and start thinking laterally.
