And on this mornings radio, it was announced Swan has also left out the $10B allocated for green energy as well as the NBN out of the budget.
Talk about cooking the books.
If I left out my fortnightly mortgage payments out of my household budget and pretended it wasn't there, my monthly household budget would look mighty fine too.
But it doesn't make it right though.
Swan should just cut to the chase and leave everything out of the expenditure side of the budget.
If he is going to kid himself that the government isn't spending more than the nation is earning, why not go the whole hog.
You wouldn't trust Swan with the office petty cash tin let alone this nations budget.

Historically , ALP governments have always spent less than liberal/ coalition governments .... but lets not let facts get in the way of a good slogan ... I can see Abbott slogan writers working overtime on this one

You need your head examined if you really believe that. Look at this ALP government - they are borrowing as if money grows on trees, made it so they can increase the amount they are able to borrow and allow the debt to grow by at least $100m per day. They even tried to spend their way out of the GFC with a pathetic stimulus package which ended in entirely preventable deaths and billions of dollars wasted/rorted due to a lack of checks and balances. Labor have no freaking idea what good fiscal policy is - wouldn't know it if it hit them in the head.

The Federal Opposition has again incorrectly alleged that it could save money by cutting the Labor Federal Government’s multi-billion dollar National Broadband Network project, despite financial projections which show the project is likely to make the Government billions.

The NBN is not listed in the Federal Budget as an expense because it is technically a government investment and will consequently not divert money away from other projects.
This accounting technique has been verified by economists from the Parliamentary Library of Australia as an “internationally accepted accounting standard”

In addition, in the long term, NBN Co’s projections show the network is slated to make a return of between 5.3 percent and 8.8 percent on the up to $44.6 billion that will be invested in the network — meaning it will return an amount ranging from $1.93 billion to $3.92 billion, as well as delivering Australia a fibre optic telecommunications network to replace Telstra’s aging copper infrastructure.

Anyone who believes the NBN will be a profit making experience has rocks in their head. Virtually every goalpost for the NBN has been missed. It is already 2 years over its original date. The budget has been increased and takeup rates are about 1/5 of what is expected. You can believe what you like about the NBN's worth but expecting ot to make a profit at all - nevermind a windfall - is the reasoning of people who have never looked at govt-run businesses. Even the Commonwealth bank, operating in a secotr that is a licenst to print money, made the lowest by far profits of any major bank when govt-owned. In a market like telecommunications, the chances of ANY company making a huge profit is small and a govt operation, nil chance.

FINES for speeding motorists and other law breakers will reap a record $2.8 billion for government coffers over the next four years.

More than ever, the State Government will depend on fines to stay in the black.

A 12.5 per cent hike in fines was foreshadowed before Budget day, and this move will deliver an additional $70 million to the bottom line during 2012-13.

But the value of the hike will then soar, bringing in an extra $118 million the following year.

Taking into account the 2.5 per cent rise from July 1 that had been approved in March, fines will deliver an extra $109 million to the bottom line.

Without that, the Baillieu Government would have been left with a razor-thin $46 million surplus.

Budget papers said the increase was largely due to the 12.5 per cent hike on top of the regular increase that’s linked to the consumer price index, which was 2.5 per cent.

Toll road evasion fines were expected to rise by 14.4 per cent, and non-traffic and court fines were expected to go up by 16.7 per cent.

But speed camera fine revenue will soar by 19.1 per cent, and police on-the-spot fines even more, by 26.9 per cent.

The Budget papers concede that “road safety initiatives” will be another reason for the increased reliance on fines.

Treasurer Kim Wells said people weren’t forced to pay fines.

“With the fines, it’s a voluntary system,” Mr Wells said.

“We have put it in as a revenue measure (and) at the end of the day, if people don’t speed or drop litter, or graffiti, they don’t pay.”

The Budget papers say the fine increase was “to strengthen the deterrence of offending behaviour”.

But the move will leave the government $419 million better off over the next four years.

Then Rudd was axed, you dropped your support for him immediately - and this Government lurched from disaster to disaster ever since.
