A comparison in policies requires a comparison in arrival by boats in this instance

What this shows is that during the 2002-2007 Pacific Solution period, asylum seeker numbers fell worldwide.

So either the fall in numbers in Australia had nothing to do with the Pacific Solution and was simply part of a worldwide trend or else by some magic spell the Pacific Solution persuaded asylum seekers not to seek asylum in countries like France.

Unless you can explain how such a magic spell works maccaw, I think this shows quite clearly that the Pacific Solution was a dud. That Australians paid through the nose for. And you righties so desperately want to do it all again based on your dim grasp of facts and deep held prejudices.

Illegal boat arrivals? So you want to talk about private yachts that don't follow proper entry procedure? There are probably some numbers for that somewhere but really, it'd be tiny.

Like I say, there'd be stats somewhere. I figured it'd be tiny but that may not be the case.

For instance, did you know a boat needs to give Customs 96 hours notice prior to entry to Australian waters? Without HF radio that's nigh on impossible and most yachts don't have HF radio. Mine for instance only has VHF which is line of sight only. So at best, I'd be able to do maybe a few hours of the coastline, once I'm over the horizon and the coast is in view.

This covers the full gamut, including the 2002-2007 Pacific Solution period. Basically, it's the same deal as for the overall numbers for Australia. Surprise, eh?

So there are actually two separate components to the humanitarian program within our immigration system. People arriving by boat have no impact on the “queue”.

Further, according to our Immigration Department, "the size and composition of the resettlement program are influenced by a number of factors, including an estimate of the number of people likely to be found in need of protection in Australia in accordance with international obligations under the Refugees Convention “

In practice this means the number of offshore refugees we accept into Australia each year is independent of the number of onshore asylum seekers. Keeping in mind most of these onshore asylum seekers arrived by plane, not by boat.

Baron, it is a gross misrepresentation of the truth to suggest that boat people are pushing offshore refugees further down the "queue". It is a misrepresentation aimed squarely at vilifying boat people to put them offside with mainstream Australians who typically possess an acute sense of the fair go. It is disappointing that this untruth continues to be cultivated by prominent members of the coalition and their mouthpieces in the media.
