An asylum seeker boat intercepted off the coast of WA last night is the 300th to arrive since the Howard government’s Pacific Solution was abolished, the opposition says.

The Australian Navy stopped the “suspected illegal entry vessel“ northwest of Ashmore Islands on Friday night.

Around 60 passengers said to be on board were taken to Christmas Island.

The federal opposition says the arrival again demonstrates the government’s failure to protect the country’s borders.

“The latest illegal boat arrival, with 60 people on board, is the 300th boat and the 300th border protection policy failure under Labor,” Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said in a statement today.

He estimated almost 17,000 people had illegally arrived by boat, since Labor won the federal election in 2007.

Former Prime Minister John Howard’s Pacific Solution, which from 2001 to 2007 saw asylum seekers transported to detention centres on small nations in the Pacific, rather than to mainland Australia, was abolished by the Labor government.

17,000 asylum seekers in total by boat in 5 years...so hardly a drop in the ocean when it comes to our total annual migration target and the asylum seekers and actual illegals that fly in every year.
More fear and hatred and the bashing of minority groups to try and attract the uninformed, ignorant white trash vote.
The amount of asylum seekers flooding across borders in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas has reached massive levels since Howard lost government and all the neo cons can think to whinge about is the piddling amount we have helped in the last 5 years.
Its really quite pathetic.

So 300 boats carrying fare paying passengers; each contributing between $5,000 and $15,000 per head have managed to jump all the queues where people, really impoverished people, have been waiting in camps over the globe some for 5 years for their precious turn to immigrate to Australia.

And the ones with the money, IT IS ALWAYS THE ONES WITH THE MONEY in this World, have taken their places, over and over and over again.

You want to feel sorry for someone, then feel sorry for the really poor ones, who missed out because these people had the money to pay pirates and pay them well to get here.
