Australian Minister Stephen Smith

"Thank you for that kind introduction and I delighted to be your guest here.

The 60th Anniversary of Israel's statehood, celebrated last year, was a time to reflect on and celebrate Israel's achievements.

It was also an opportunity to reaffirm Australia's ongoing support and friendship for Israel.

And from a personal point of view, I was pleased to be able to make my first visit to Israel as Foreign Minister during that anniversary year.

As Prime Minister Rudd said to the Australian Parliament on that occasion, Australia's relationship with Israel is both strong and deep.

Australia's commitment could not be more resolute, our friendship could not be closer.

We share a unique relationship based on Australia's historical support for Israel and our shared commitment to freedom, security and democracy. Our friendship will remain strong because our values are shared.

....."

You're implying that just about all of them are hiding their true identity. That is not true.

They fly into Indonesia with a visa and passport, they could fly into Australia to claim asylum.

Why would you pay 10x the cost of an airfare to risk your life on an unseaworthy boat when you could fly in without having to employ a people smuggler?

Look where Christmas Island is on google earth, about 350 km from Indonesia and they still have to go another 1800-2000 km to reach mainland Australia.

They fly to Indonesia but to fly to Australia they must then have a tourist visa , which must be approved before arriving at the airport ... if an airline lets you onto the plane without that tourist visa the airline can be fined by the Australian government , so theoretically you can't get on the plane without a tourist visa as a minimum (tourist visa's are the easiest to obtain therefore the most likely to be used)... it is likely that if an Afghan, for arguments sake, without work apply's for a tourist visa to Australia it will be rejected on the grounds that they are a flight risk ... besides anyone who has time to fill out necessary paperwork is probably trying to rort the system .. the real asylum seekers DON'T travel to govt. offices to get the necessary documents required for an Asylum seeker .. its a good way of getting yourself killed

Refugees take many risks fleeing for their lives seeking freedom.....Who are we to deny them asylum because we can point to a few instances when lives have been lost and claim it justifies persecution as a deterrent.....Australia is one of the few countries in the region where refugees can seek asylum and gain freedom.....Denying these desperate people any chance of freedom and persecuting them for accepting we are a free nation that has offered assistance is not good enough from our elected officials.....Australia should be proud it is a Nation that offers a safe haven to the desperate people who seek our help for a better life.....Otherwise we should take our signature off the refugee convention and accept we are not the Nation we claim to be!!!

Angry Angry Angry

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945), Speech, September 22, 1936

The saddest thing is that our political leaders, rather than uniting in a humanitarian cause, have turned the asylum seeker issue intio a political football. The Labor Party should be ashamed of the way it is behaving.

I don't have a vote, not yet, but if I did I couldn't give it to the current Labor lot.

Not sure if you haven't the vote because your new to this country, or your to young, but boy have you got that all wrong ......

I don't have a vote yet as I have not yet qualified to be an Australian citizen. What have I got "all wrong"?

Blaming the whole asylum seeker debacle on the ALP ... We used to have Bi partisan agreement on the asylum seekers, until Howard looked like he was going to loose an election, so he decided that screw the asylum seekers, he would use them to scare the rednecks into voting for him.. his famous quote which you'll hear someone repeat on here every now and then is 'well decide who comes into this country, not the people smugglers '.. ... as far as politics goes it was a good strategy, it won him the election ... as far as humanity goes it was a giant leap backwards ...

You read me wrong, I do not blame the whole debacle on the ALP, but it is clear Labor is joining the Liberals in a rush to the bottom of the pit.

I expect the Liberals to act to type, humanitarian ideals are foreign to them. I don't expect a Labor government to act that way.

They are politicians, and it already cost them one election .. they can't or won't take the risk again .. unfortunate, but it's a reality

Yes, they are.

Perhaps you're confusing the terms 'asylum seeker' and 'refugee'.

No.  There is no queue: we have a quota system.  Keep up.

According to Great one in post #224 these boat people are displacing other immigrants do try and get your stories or fairy tales straight.

Just think instead of skilled labor we get 83.5% of them on welfare for up to 5 years thanks to the feel good tree hugging leftists.

We have a quota system.

Please buy a dictionary, look up the words 'quota' and 'queue', and save yourself any further embarrassment.

There is no queue.

Yes you hate my country, you has said this enough times. I understand but please less offense.

On the contary I am saying and have said very clearly that you are not wanted. It's you that had very little to say on this topic or on the topic most of the threads you appear on. You have a one track mind with very little traffic. IMO and I believe it's an opinion shared by most members you are deliberately derailing the forum.

If you want to discuss Israel then you are quite capable and entitled to open up a topic on that subject. You choose instead to butt in and turn every other conversation into 'All about Israel'. As there seems to be a lack willingness by the moderators to deal with you I told you to 'piss off'. Which under the circumstances I consider fair comment.

I do not 'hate Israel' or any other country. Hating countries and entire peoples is nuts. Only nutters like you and Breivik are up for that. Your countryb like any other is made up in the main of people who want to live their lives in peace and security and raise their kids in decency and love while getting on with their neighbours. Your countries leaders are doing nothing to help them in that endeavour. If you want to discuss that, I'm perfectly happy to do that. But not on this thread. Angry

It is against the law therefore illegal to enter Australia without a valid passport and visa and this applies for entering by aircraft or boat, you forfeit your boat if you bring people here without a visa.
This is the first part of the migration act that leftists ignore

That is bullshit, Australia is a tourist destination we dont let in people with criminal records that would be the only reason for rejecting a tourist visa.
They could say we visited here and then decided to check out Australia for 1 week to see seaworld ,movieworld, meter maids at sufers, etc.

And your an idiot ... my wife was once refused a tourist visa ... on the grounds that she was a flight risk because she was 29 and single and owned no property , and therefore no real reason to return ... you need to stop listening to Abbott and get out into the real world ... it's nice and easy with an Aussie passport, travel is easy ... not the case with a lot of other nationalities
