Refugees take many risks fleeing for their lives seeking freedom.....Who are we to deny them asylum because we can point to a few instances when lives have been lost and claim it justifies persecution as a deterrent.....Australia is one of the few countries in the region where refugees can seek asylum and gain freedom.....Denying these desperate people any chance of freedom and persecuting them for accepting we are a free nation that has offered assistance is not good enough from our elected officials.....Australia should be proud it is a Nation that offers a safe haven to the desperate people who seek our help for a better life.....Otherwise we should take our signature off the refugee convention and accept we are not the Nation we claim to be!!!

Angry Angry Angry

In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945), Speech, September 22, 1936

The saddest thing is that our political leaders, rather than uniting in a humanitarian cause, have turned the asylum seeker issue intio a political football. The Labor Party should be ashamed of the way it is behaving.

I don't have a vote, not yet, but if I did I couldn't give it to the current Labor lot.

Not sure if you haven't the vote because your new to this country, or your to young, but boy have you got that all wrong ......

I don't have a vote yet as I have not yet qualified to be an Australian citizen. What have I got "all wrong"?

Blaming the whole asylum seeker debacle on the ALP ... We used to have Bi partisan agreement on the asylum seekers, until Howard looked like he was going to loose an election, so he decided that screw the asylum seekers, he would use them to scare the rednecks into voting for him.. his famous quote which you'll hear someone repeat on here every now and then is 'well decide who comes into this country, not the people smugglers '.. ... as far as politics goes it was a good strategy, it won him the election ... as far as humanity goes it was a giant leap backwards ...

Understand this.

Afghan people on boats are not your people.

They are Afghan and you are Austraiian people.

I am not your people, I am Israeli and you are Aussie.

You see though I do not expect your social security, I have not paid in to your country.
These people who are not your people come and they have paid no money in to your country.
Why do you pay for them too?

They are not same as you and you owe them no thing!!

Yes, they are all human beings.  But since when did all human beings get along in peace and harmony?

My goodness, you have a lot to learn.

I suggest you start here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/60refugee.htm

"Australia's Immigration Program has two components:

•Migration Program for skilled and family migrants
Humanitarian Program for refugees and others in refugee-like situations."

Have you heard the word "humanitarian" before, or is this a new term for you?

"Onshore protection
The onshore component of the Humanitarian Program aims to provide options for people who wish to apply for protection (or asylum) after arrival in Australia."

No. How many people must die, how many lives and even whole societies must be destroyed before you accept that it's never going to happen?   One cannot be loyal to 7 billion conflicting interests, nor is there any reason to be.

You are a fool to think we have, or can, move beyond the "in group/outgroup" dynamic.  You still abide by it, you've just substituted one outgroup for another.

I receive no money from Australia.

Why?

Because my people pay no into Australia.

To expect it is rude and insulting.
When you give them your tax money you deny Aussies the same money.

You do not need to give it these people.

Do you think your better because you receive no tax money? Are you jealous because you can't get assistance and they can? Is that why your so concerned with Australias Asylum seeker policy? Petty

Incorrect.

It's all part of Australia's Immigration quota.
