If you had to choose between life or death, would you choose to stay and risk being killed, or choose to leave knowing that you venture into the unknown? It's a fight or flight response. I daresay most would choose to run, not knowing where they are running.

And I'm not saying that they don't have any responsibilities. But I'm sure they would be willing to start a fresh life and take on responsibility, a life with a purpose (willing to work for money, use their skills, etc) if we actually gave them a chance?

What would you do to educate and prepare yourself if you were in that situation? Would you just quickly run by the government, who probably wants you dead, and ask them for a visa because you want to start a new life in a country you don't know? Most likely not. Most do not know where they are headed.

I could guarantee you that asylum seekers would not want to leave their country, their culture, their heritage, their home, what they know, for a place that they do not, if they did not have to. They would not risk their lives to jump on a boat and sail across the world if they did not have to.

They are economic invaders who blow up planes and trains. Even their children and their childrens children will revert back to type. They refuse to have a reformation. Send 'em back.

We don't really know that they're escaping death. We're told that, but it's rarely proven. I am doubtful because some family members come over then get the rest of their family to join them on some family reunion scheme. Also, there's been reports of some going back to the country they fled for a holiday.

In my own case, I would stay and fight to the death. Australia is my country and it is the duty of every able bodied man and women to defend it from retrograde thugs.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but no asylum seekers have been found to be terrorists.

And check the human rights documents... there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker.

You are completely right, people have this idea that asylum seekers are breaking the law and therefore don't have any rights and should be sent back. It is legal in Australia to seek asylum by boat, they are neither engaging in illegal activity, nor are they immigrants. The Un refugee Convention recognises that refugees have a lawful right to enter a country for the purpose of seeking asylum, regardless of how they arrive of whether they hold valid travel of identity documents. Besides, their are often very good reasons why asylum seekers don't have these documents. It is often too dangerous for refugees to apply for a passport or exit visa or approach an Australian Embassy for a visa, as such actions could put their lives, and the lives of their families, at risk.

I think it is a very easy argument to sit their and say that you would simply stay and put up with you and your family being tortured and traumatised. Maybe you really would stay, but would you make your children? As long as it is legal for asylum seekers to enter Australia for the purpose of seeking Asylum, Australia should respect their human rights while they are here and put a time limit on detention.

Paying people smugglers to bring you here by boat should be illegal. Smiley

There are enough genuine refugees that need help. Sad

Send those supporting people smuggling straight back from whence they came. Cool

What is a genuine refugee? It is legal to seek asylum by boat in Australia, I don't know where you are getting your information from but please be informed before you post. Just because an asylum seekers pays someone to bring them to Australia by boat, does not mean they are not a "genuine refugee". Economic status has no bearing on refugee status, it makes no difference whether they are rich or poor - the point is they are at risk or have been at risk of persecution.

The FriYAY dictionary defines a genuine refugee as...

A genuine refugee – someone that can’t afford to pay a people smuggler.

A genuine refugee – someone that is not on the TV so as to tug your bleeding heart strings.

A genuine refugee – someone that will die looking through a fence and never have the where-with-all to be able to pay a people smuggler.

I didn’t say it was illegal – don’t put words up I didn’t say so you can have a semantics tanty.

No, economic status doesn’t have a bearing on refugee status – AGAIN I never said it did. But it does have a baring on whether you can pay people, that deal in the misery of others, to bring you here.

People that pay people smugglers should be sent home. Smiley

While it may seem like those who have the money to pay a people have an unfair advantage the reality is they are still refugees. If they are sent home they will be sent home with nothing (as most pay cent they have to people smugglers). They face torture and death if they return and in some countries for example Iran, the government denies refugees reentry into the country, and what about those who are stateless?

Whether or not a people smuggler is paid to get them here is irrelevant. If they meet the UN Conventions definition of a refugee, then Australia has an obligation to protect them and NOT send them back to a country where there life and freedom is threatened.

Pretty obvious conclusion. why would other countries allow our citizens to enter if we dont allow them to enter our country?
