Why do the leftards talk about visa overstayers like they are related to asylum seekers when they have nothing in common?

So TRUE. VISA OVERSTAYERS ARE illegal aliens IN THIS COUNTRY.
While ASYLUM SEEKERS are legally seeking asylum to stay here after having to flee their country of origin, glad you agree, baronnonthinker.

I agree you are a stupid assclown.

Only a dim witted leftard would compare those who the migration act forbids from claiming asylum to those who can.

Far to much attention and focus is on this issue.

smack me, if you can survive a leaky boat across oceans with nothing, you have the kind of guts and determination required to pass my welcome to Australia test.

I agree. Unfortunately, the tabloid media worked out long ago that lowly educated xenophobic bogans thrive on this subject. Just look at this thread.

You seem a little confused.  I'll clear it up for you.

Those on the retarded right are constantly calling asylum seekers "illegals".  "Illegal boat people", etc.

Now, what those on the left are pointing out is that asylum seekers, coming by boat, are not illegal (and there are very few of them).  The real "illegals" are the visa overstayers, and there are tens of thousands of them.

If the retarded right stopped referring to boat people as "illegals", then the left would not have to make reference to visa overstayers.  It's up to you.

"This anxiety is not supported by the numbers. About 4500 asylum seekers have arrived by boat in the past year. Compare this to 200,000 new permanent residents each year and about 50,000 visa overstayers from such places as New Zealand, Britain and the US."

long term enforced onland detention is failed.

instant deporting or off to some desolate island is successful for us thanks.

if illegals want to come here illegally and pay criminals $1000's for doing so, that's their play.
ours should mirror theirs.

Asylum seekers coming to Australia by boat are not "illegals".

Stop listening to Bolty.

The Australian Government has used negative connotations to describe asylum seekers and refugees - "boat people" "possible terrorists" "people who are here for our jobs and our money" "unlawful and illegal non-citizens". Funny how they rarely mention visa over stayers, although they do come under the same branch. It's because the Government doesn't see them as a perceived threat.

These boat people are actually fleeing their own country in fear of persecution, torture and war. What would you do in that situation? Stay in your own country or try your chances at a better life?

The Australian Government should know better. Their lives are just too good. So much for the land of the free, one of the best countries in the world. We don't help these people, we make their lives worse! Some chance at a better life, mandatory detention is hardly better than what they are fleeing from! Australia is one of the most developed countries in the world, yet we have some of the strictest and toughest immigration policies there is. Beats me.

If they were fleeing for safety reasons, then they should be happy to be in the safety of the Australian government while they get processed. Otherwise they are just country shopping.

What's wrong with country shopping?

What's wrong with people wanting the absolute best they can legally get?

If it were me, I'd be aiming for the best.

So, what's wrong, exactly, with country shopping?

Nothing, just be prepared to be in detention until we can make sure you are who you say you are.

Where does the assumption come from that refugees/asylum seekers are any more likely to be terrorists than anyone else?

What are we teaching these people and the rest of the world about who we are as a nation? That we inprison vulberable people who have nowhere to go and label them as criminals and terrorists. Australia and NZ are the only nations in our region that are signitories to the refugee convention (1951) and we have the resources to help. We'd certainly be able to help lot more people AND save millions of taxpayer dollars if detention wasn't part of the deal.
