ACTU suspend HSU
Apr 5th, 2012 at 4:24pm

http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/13355563/actu-votes-to-suspend-hsu/

The ACTU says its decision to suspend the Health Services Union (HSU) reinforces its "zero tolerance" stance on corruption but the embattled union's members should not be disadvantaged by the move.

ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence said the executive voted overwhelmingly to suspend the HSU at a meeting in Melbourne on Thursday until the union can resolve issues of governance and financial management.

The HSU, which represents 77,000 aged care and health sector workers, has been the subject of two Fair Work Australia investigations into workplace law breaches and financial mismanagement.

It is also facing police probes in NSW and Victoria and an independent investigation, instigated by concerned HSU officials, by former anti-corruption boss Ian Temby QC.

"(The suspension) restates our zero tolerance for corruption and our commitment to transparent and accountable use of members' funds'" Mr Lawrence told reporters in Melbourne.

"We make no suggestion of guilt with respect to any individuals associated and we recognise the work that's happened particularly within the HSU national office to address issues.

"But the executive was of the view overwhelmingly that it was important for us to make a clear statement and has therefore suspended the HSU as an affiliated union effective immediately."

Mr Lawrence said the decision effectively meant the HSU would not be represented at the ACTU's highest representative bodies, including the executive and ACTU Congress to be held in May.

He also said the ACTU executive would monitor the situation.

"If and when the HSU as a whole is able to demonstrate that it's addressed these issues and that it's got a plan for the future of the union and the executive, we'll reconsider this matter."

Wow..you fellas are suddenly concerned about union members.
If Abbott is to impatient to wait until the next election to claim his birthright then he should take some Valium and have a good lie down for 18mths.

you might get some credibility if you could address the reason HSU have been suspended rather than attack everyone else.

Why would I care..Im not a member of the HSU and Im guessing none of you are either.
Its up to the members to sort their own crap out and I doubt Abbott gives a toss about any of them. If there was more than 1 seat between him and his birthright there wouldn't even be a murmur about it from the coalition.
Abbott..a friend of the average union member...give me a break.

given the way the ALP and ACTU have had to be dragged kicking and screaming to this point, Id say Abbott is a far better friend to them than the ALP have been.

The ALP is no friend of union members either..both parties are playing a pathetic political game at the expense of a group of low paid union members.
Both Abbott and Gillard are dogs.

What a bunch of hypocritical arseh....s the ACTU is.

I can remember way back when Bob Hawke was President of the ACTU. I was in Ansett then and the Federated Clerks Union which represented Traffic  Staff at the airport wasn't  doing its job.

Think Hayman Island holidays for selected people up the ladder and work from that point on.

In any case we formed the Airline Employees Association.  Ansett Airlines sacked the Traffic Staff who joined nationwide.

We used a QC to go to the ACTU and Bob Hawke didn't want to know about us. Even though we were totally in the right.

The ACTU is the biggest can of worms you are ever likely to stumble across, it's like falling in a sh.t pit, dealing with them.

We didn't get our jobs back and I ended up joining the Police where the recruiting officer told, "you won't have to worry about crooked unions here."  Which I didn't, the Police Association were great for the length of my career, in fact I am still a member.

I used to be a fee-paying member of the HSU due to my occupation at the time Thomson was misusing members' funds to finance his sexual desires. It upsets me greatly that my payments were not used for their stated purpose, but were instead used because Thomson was too horny to keep it in his pants.

All of the Unions are the same - interested in only one thing and that is the power that they can wield in Canberra.
