Shopkeepers shot themselves in the foot
Mar 11th, 2012 at 7:56am

when they went big time on the self-serve.

Isn't this the reason for wholesale shoplifting?

These days, it's hard to find a staff member to help one find an item in the isles.

In addressing one busily stacking shelves, he answered, "I don't work here".

Well he was telling the truth, he had delivered what he was stacking.

It seems that what the proprietors save on staff wages they lose out on theft result being that it causes general displeasure.

Guess it is up to governments to police this crime - more staff would be a sure way to control what happens on the floor but more staff would mean expenditure on insurance and payroll.

Think! If there were more employed in our supermarkets, less would be a drain on Welfare!

Just a passing thought. . .

This is something that seems to be happening a lot now.  We are turning into a self serve world.  It does away with staff, thus less wages to pay.  I remember the days when one would go to a train station, and someone would sell you a ticket.  Now its a machine.  The days when an attendant would fill the car with petrol.  Now you do it yourself.  Yes in many ways, it is becoming very much a self serve world.   Sad

Jow much would it cost to have a youngster help older people to put air in the tyres and fill the fuel tank?

Why aren't the service stations. . .serving?

It probably would not cost very much to employe a youngster to do these things.  Yet never the less, they still wont do it as it is a cost.  Also all these new systems with public transport.  How much do they cost?.  I would rather have a person sell me a train ticket.  Also how about bringing back the conductors?.  The money saved from all these machines and systems, would more than pay the wages.   Sad

The large department stores and supermarkets are not concerned with theft. They increase prices to cover for the loss. It's the consumer that loses out.

Buy online and you don't have to cover for loss.....unless your purchase gets lost in the mail ha ha , it's never happened to me though.

We pay more for purchases from a store but at least, if they don't work, we can return them.

My daughter and I bought a computer recently from a store - it turned out a dud.

Next morning we took it back to the store and got another one. This time, my daughter had a technician test it properly before we brought it home.

That's something we couldn't do buying on line.

... and who'd be the
BIGGEST WHINGER
when the INCREASED wage outgoings were built into - and resulted in
INCREASED retail pricing
?
