Women's 4x100m freestyle relay claim Australia's first gold at London Olympics

AUSTRALIA won its first gold medal of the London Olympics when the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team swam out of their skins in a superb performance.
Led off by Alicia Coutts, who earlier swam in the semi-finals of the women’s butterfly and made the final, Australia were third after the first change before Cate Campbell narrowed the gap to second.

Teenager Brittany Elmslie put Australia in front with a blistering 53.41sec split before Melanie Schlanger hung on over a fast-finishing Netherlands with and the United States back in third.

Australia won in 3:33.15 -- which was a new Olympic record.

I stopped watching the Olympics when they started allowing 'professional' sports and sports people to participate.

...kinda sums up the world at the moment, everything has too much freedom like an over-cooked steak. Even Gays have too much 'freedom' ...why not the failed 'family man' known as the
Redneck to go out have the right to Riot,e tc Roll Eyes

USA has too much freedom and hence the 'over-inflation'.

Australia and its lack of 'conviction' to stand up for 'itself' shows how too 'passive' it is as well.

Reply #23 - Jul 31^st, 2012 at 10:51am yep. it's all superfluous anyway. you don't need the spectacle to have a great show. a nice minimalistic performance, something akin to what the ancient greeks used to do, would have a lot more dignity than the over the top shite they came out with in the opening ceremony this year.

I've never given a single gram of bugger about the opening ceremony - the competition is what it's all about, not some tacky light show with marching bands, flag waving and kangaroos riding on bikes. But it seems I am the exception - tickets to the opening ceremony are the most expensive and highly sought after of all.

Bring back the ancient olympics I say.
