Outrage at vandalism of Aboriginal graves

Racist vandalism at an Aboriginal burial site on the far north coast of New South Wales is being investigated by police.

It is thought the graveyard on Letitia Road at Fingal Head was defaced sometime between 7:30am (AEDT) and 9:30am on Tuesday.

Gudginbarra man Kevin Slab has family members buried at the site, and says it is a distressing incident.

"They just had the words 'white power' and a swastika and 'KKK' written on there and also they destroyed one of the headstones of one of our uncles," he said.

"There was a photograph which they smashed and left lying there, so that's pretty traumatic for the family."

The state's Minister for Aboriginal Affairs says it is the work of a sick mind.

Victor Dominello says he has been trying to contact the affected families to pass on the Government's condolences.

He says thankfully it is a rare incident.

"It really is a putrid, vile act," Mr Dominello said.

"It's the act of a very sick mind and it's quite disturbing that it takes place in 2012."

'Shocking, frightening'

Those sentiments have been echoed by the Tweed Mayor.

Barry Longland says he has heard nothing to suggest there is a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan operating in the area.

"One shudders to see those letters appear in 2012," he said.

"You sort of associate that kind of racial slur back to the 70s and 80s...

"What marks any society is their capacity to respect cultural difference, and to see that this had taken place was frightening and shocking.

"There is a very close-knit community there with a strong Indigenous representation...
