Newman must explain donations: Bligh
Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman must explain why a developer donated $72,000 to his council re-election fund under seven different names, the premier says.
Developer Philip Usher made the donations to Forward Brisbane Leadership - the fundraising entity for Mr Newman and his council team when he was still Brisbane lord mayor, The Australian newspaper reports.
The donations were made in the weeks leading up to the council approving two residential towers that exceeded height limits.
The final payment was made on February 7, 2011, the newspaper reports.
Mr Usher was subsequently given approval to build the two towers, one 20 storeys high, the other 12 - at Woolloongabba in inner Brisbane on February 22 that year.
Premier Anna Bligh says Mr Campbell must explain why the donations were made under so many different company names.
"Why did this developer seek to use seven different names and companies to make seven different donations in a matter of days?" Ms Bligh told the ABC on Thursday.
"If this is all above board, why not just make one donation in one company name of more than $70,000?"
Mr Newman on Wednesday dismissed the premier's suggestions of a "dodgy deal" as rubbish.
"This is just the same old malarkey from the Labor party that we've seen for the last 11 months," he told reporters.
"It was an open and transparent process.
"The development application was recommended by the independent professional town planning council officers of the BCC (Brisbane City Council). It went through all the normal processes."
Ms Bligh also accused Mr Newman of preparing to throw out the rule book on the business interests of cabinet members.
The Courier-Mail on Thursday reported Mr Newman and his wife Lisa would keep their array of business interests if he becomes premier of an LNP government.
"Mr Newman this morning has revealed he'll throw that rule book out the window," Ms Bligh told the ABC.
She said those rules required all ministers to divest themselves of any shareholdings or directorships of any companies.
The LNP said it had no plan to change the current rules.
"We will comply with the cabinet handbook and it will apply to all members of the cabinet, including Mr Newman," deputy LNP leader Tim Nicholls told the ABC.
