Finland has NO private schools. Are we being conned

EMMA ALBERICI: Pasi Sahlberg is director-general of the ministry of education in Helsinki, but he's spending more and more of his time outside Finland teaching governments and schools the Finnish way.

Finland consistently beats most of the rest of the countries in the OECD in maths, reading and literacy at all levels of primary and high school. The secret, according to him, is to be found in Finland's highly educated teachers.

Teaching in Finland is a respected and prestigious profession, and it's paid accordingly. Gaining entry to study teaching is extremely competitive, and nearly every teacher in the country has a master's degree.

And where does Australia rank with all of its yuppy overpriced private elitist bullshit schools ?? Cheesy LOL

Finland is proof that private schools in Australia are nothing more than a smoke and mirrors con job stealing money away from the public education system Sad Private schools are setup as businesses designed to rip off gullible parents and tax payers but nobody questions it !!

Given the effort Finland has placed into public schools, this comes at no surprise.
Nearly every teacher has a masters degree?
Ours in the public system can barely spell, which is why private schooling is so attractive in this country.

I quite like the current private school system.

I went to private school and am glad that I did.

teh only reason it exists is because some religious wank decided that the only way to ensure their religious claptrap wasn't exposed for what the diatribe it is, was to seperate themselves from the apostates and non-believers by declaring their schools were denominational. It is the high of hypocrisy for these zealot wanks to declare they believe in equality in delivery in education for all then to internally desseminate a lie that their school is "one of the elite eduction facilities where future ministers, doctors and industry leaders are produced from the ranks therein".

We don't subsidise people to use toll roads, we dont susidise peple who fly via air instead driving, there are a lot of choices in this life that we can make were if we believe that by making that choice it suits us better then it's worth paying for it. But where is it written that the poor should subsidise the middle class and wealthy to send their rugrats to private school.

The question isn't "have we been conned" - it is rather, for how long have we been conned....?

In Finland no school is run as a business and every school is treated equally unlike these elitist scammers who expect the tax payers to underwrite them and their crooked businesses.

Well thank goodness we are NOT Finnish... quite like the balance of private and public that Australia has in both health and education.

I have been a public school teacher for 30 years and have NO desire to go to the private system as I believe  public is as good as private.

I do not hate the private teachers and kids as many on here do but think that we are all working for the same outcome..... and all children deserve tax money towards their education not just the public schools.   Grin

dimwit... if you read the entire article you'd see that the reason they have no private school is that EVERY public school is allowed to run like a private school. they hire ther own teachers, design their wn curriculum, rase their own extra funds etc... sound familiar? yes it is the PRIVATE school philosophy but run by the state. except of course te state DOESNT run it - the schools run themselves.

as you so often do, your own information says the opposie of what you claim.

remarkable level of stupidity....

One point that is not made very strongly is that the notion that the outcome of Finnish students is better than average is not a tested assumption. they have not standardised testing (by their own admission) and therefore their relative outcomes are not measurable. Any statement that they do better than the rest of Europe is a (literally)untested assumption.

They are all run as public schools funded by the tax payer. The emphasis is on equality and not  discrimination which is how it works here.

Why do you continue to write so much sh.t on these forums.
