Are people aware that Tony Abbott's paid maternity leave scheme that rewards people on higher income as a reverse means testing (up to $75 000 for 6 months leave) will be paid for with a temporary levy on big business but eventually revert to being funded by taxpayers once the budget returns to surplus.....Taxpayers will be funding this crap policy that is unfair and inequitable.....Why do people who are better off need more money to raise a child???

Bishop hopes parental leave levy temporary

Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop has played down the impost the Coalition's paid parental leave plan would have on big business.

Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott has put forward a proposal to tax big business to help pay for a 26-week parental leave scheme.

Under the proposal, companies with a taxable income of more than $5 million a year will be hit with a 1.7 per cent levy.

But speaking on Channel Nine, Ms Bishop suggested the levy could be scrapped once the budget returns to surplus.

"There is no surplus. Labor has spent the surplus. They've driven us into deficit," she said.

"So we've come up with what previous Coalition governments have done before when they've taken over a budget in deficit and a massive debt and that is impose what we hope will be a temporary levy."

http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/coalition-should-not-waver-from-its-origi...

http://www.news.com.au/features/federal-election/paid-parental-leave-abbott-tipp...

The Liberals' tax on big business will begin a year before its promised cut to the company tax rate.  It will mean big firms will pay 31.5 per cent tax in the first year. After that, the tax cut and the parental levy will cancel each other out.

He has said his levy will be "temporary", and he wants it removed when the Budget goes back into surplus.  But he has not tied himself to a timeline on that.

Under his original parental leave policy, Mr Abbott would have effectively increased company tax for big business by 0.2 per cent, pulling an extra $600,000 a year off companies.

Taxpayers will be paying for this scheme that rewards greed and provides more money determined by the more income you have as a reverse means test!!!

Virgin Australia says its domestic ticket prices will rise by as much as $6 per flight due to the federal government's carbon pricing scheme.

Virgin said on Tuesday that a $1.50 surcharge would be applied for flights of less than 900 kilometres from March 1, rising to $3 for flights between 901-2000 kilometres and $6 for sectors longer than 2000 kilometres.

"These surcharges are consistent with the initial modelling Virgin Australia announced in July 2011, estimating that the average increase per sector would be $A3.00," Virgin said in a statement on Tuesday.

Separately, the airline said a $US3 ($A2.80) surcharge would be added on all its codeshare flights to European Union countries from March 1.

While Virgin does not operate flights to Europe, the airline sold codeshare flights with Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi to destinations that were part of the European Union's emissions trading scheme.

"The surcharge is applicable on flights into and out of EU countries only," Virgin said.

Imagine now trying to run a car like that in Australia with a carbon tax and the petrol prices there??

Special deal lets Coalition keep payrise

TAXPAYERS are set to give two Coalition frontbenchers an extra $45,000 a year pay which legislation says they're not actually entitled to.
It solves a sensitive problem for Opposition Leader Tony Abbott whose shadow ministry is too big.

In December the independent Remuneration Tribunal decided that shadow ministers should receive a premium on their pay of just short of $45,000 to take into account their extra duties.

However, the number of shadow ministers was limited to the numbers in the Government's ministry.

Legislation says a Prime Minister can have a maximum of 30 ministers. Tony Abbott has 32 shadow ministers.

Mr Abbott was faced with the embarrassing task of telling two of his front bench colleagues that they were expendable as shadow ministers - at least as far as pay rises went.

It is unlikely he would find volunteers to forego an extra $45,000, which would be on top of their base salary of about $185,000 a year.

A spokeswoman for the tribunal today said senior tribunal officials "didn't know anything about it".

A spokesman of Special Minister of State Gary Gray said the minister had no been involved in any deal.

However, news.com.au understands the Opposition is confident of transition arrangements being agreed to.

Legislation covering a range of pay rises for MPs and senators passed the Senate last night and will take about two weeks to get royal assent.

The tribunal will then consider any submissions for changes based on transition measures.

A compromise was reached. The Opposition will be able to keep its 32-member shadow ministry and all will be paid the higher rate.

Abbott claims he wants a smaller Government yet he has cost taxpayers an extra $90 000 a year to have two extra shadow ministers.....What a flake!!!

You don't half have some nerve though Buzz.

If you want to live a certain way with the ecology and environmentalism - then do so.

The issue I have is - why do you want to try and enforce it onto me and how I live?

Stop trying to tell people like me how to live if I want to fly in planes, drive a 5 liter car and run my air con all day.

an OBVIOUS response ...

Could you contain the "fruits" of your irresponsible, self indugent lifestyle to your OWN "world" - I wouldn't have an issue

But you CAN'T

When you infect your OWN world with exessive carbon emissions - you infect EVERYONES

The Earth has but ONE atmosphere
It belongs to ALL of us
It's care is the RESPONSIBILITY of all of us

But you raise an interesting point ...
As the most "frequent flyers" - with the BIGGEST houses, the BIGGEST cars and the BIGGEST air-cons - "the rich" create the BIGGEST emission outputs and are, hence, the BIGGEST drivers of climate change

It is only fair that they should be the demographic that pays slightly more in the carbon pricing compensation arrangements

They CAN pay
They SHOULD pay
They WILL pay

Liberal Broadbent calls on Abbott to divert maternity pay to disability scheme

TONY Abbott has been tackled by his own side over the Coalition's $6.3 billion paid parental leave scheme, with one of his MPs urging the money go instead to a national disability insurance scheme.

In the Coalition party room today, Victorian Liberal Russell Broadbent called for a re-think of the generous plan, which would deliver wealthy mums up to $75,000 in parental leave payments.

Mr Broadbent a passionate advocate for people with disabilities said if the Coalition could find the money, it should be directed towards an NDIS.

He was slapped down by Mr Abbott, who re-affirmed the Coalition commitment to his paid parental leave policy, saying it was not a welfare measure but a "workplace entitlement".

Mr Abbott criticised Julia Gillard for "playing politics" with disability insurance by claiming it as a Labor reform when it had bipartisan support, and when Labor was yet to commit funding for it.

...Several other MPs backed the Opposition Leader's commitment to the paid parental leave scheme, including Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey, who warned the Coalition could not keep imposing taxes on Australians.

Mr Hockey stressed to colleagues the Coalition had to get the budget bottom line right before allocating money to schemes like the NDIS.

He said the Coalition's paid parental leave scheme would be covered by a 1.5 per cent levy on about 3000 companies.

Labor has only committed $10 million from existing programs towards the $6.5 billion National Disability Insurance scheme, and is at war with the states over how it will be funded.

Coalition disabilities spokesman Mitch Fifield accused Ms Gillard earlier this week of unfairly dragging disabled people into Labor's leadership debate after she claimed the scheme as one of her key reforms as Prime Minister.

So the Liberal party can find $6.3 billion for the rich to have babies in what is a reverse means tested policy of greed but cannot find any money to fund the most disadvantaged in our society.....I guess silver spoons cost a lot when you already make $150 000 a year???

Phil why do you have a problem in helping out families to have children and make it less painful to adjust to one wage?

I think its a good thing.

When we had our first child our household income was cut in half overnight. We went from a very easy lifestyle of $18k per month after tax to half that in one fair swoop.

You try losing $9k in your budget every month and tell me you don't notice it!!

We have to help families.

There is now a paid parental leave system where in the past their wasn't one.....Why does there need to be reverse means testing that provides more support on a scale that pays more to people determined by the more they earn???

Why do people on higher wages need more money to have a child.....The money used to pay mothers more depending on what they earn could be far better spent on  disability insurance scheme or dental health scheme than providing well off families with added support that lower income families who get less money and less support in a reverse means tested income support scheme.....Why are people who earn more money more deserving of greater support...With Abbott's scheme the less you earn the less support you are given???

The fact is that Abbott's scheme will also be paid for by taxpayers when the budget returns to surplus.....so why should taxpayers fund more money to people who are earning more to start with....What ever happened to planning for a child and living within your means....I fail to see why babies who are born to mothers who earn more require more Government assistance....Do you care to explain it to me???

In the United States we are an example that you can tackle climate change issues without having a carbon tax and also still keeping energy and petrol prices very low.

My energy bill in the United States to power a 5 bedroom house which is 20% bigger than what I had in Melbourne is about 60% of the cost.

I also only pay 88c per litre for petrol.

No American airline has a carbon levy.

Yet still climate change is being addressed in the USA.

Don't let people tell you the carbon tax is necessary. It isn't!

This is the part which most would not agree with. The evidence would show that the US are not addressing climat change.
