Virgin increase price due to carbon tax
Feb 28th, 2012 at 5:57pm

http://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/virgin-raises-prices-due-carbon-053821437.html

Virgin Australia says its domestic ticket prices will rise by as much as $6 per flight due to the federal government's carbon pricing scheme.

Virgin said on Tuesday that a $1.50 surcharge would be applied for flights of less than 900 kilometres from March 1, rising to $3 for flights between 901-2000 kilometres and $6 for sectors longer than 2000 kilometres.

"These surcharges are consistent with the initial modelling Virgin Australia announced in July 2011, estimating that the average increase per sector would be $A3.00," Virgin said in a statement on Tuesday.

Separately, the airline said a $US3 ($A2.80) surcharge would be added on all its codeshare flights to European Union countries from March 1.

While Virgin does not operate flights to Europe, the airline sold codeshare flights with Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi to destinations that were part of the European Union's emissions trading scheme.

"The surcharge is applicable on flights into and out of EU countries only," Virgin said.

Next, add Liberal and Labor's lack of action on Peak Oil costs.

Both have no action on Peak Oil

Yeah and the wonderful Ms Gillard is giving me thousands in tax reductions to compensate. I don't know how I'll afford that extra $150...  Cheesy

What Long forgets to mention, the $150 is made up mostly from the neglect of infrastructure by liberal and Labor governments.

Nothing to little do with air travel or a carbon pricing.

It's a red herring.

Try telling me it is due to the carbon tax.....When Governments sell off assets the taxpayer ends up paying for infrastructure twice.....Power bills in WA have increased 116% since the Barnett Government came to office 3 years ago.....There is no relief of help to low or middle income earners for the rises.....Coalition Governments mean higher prices and reduced services but they can claim to be better economic managers.....The Coalition do not care how much you pay as long as they can point to a surplus and say look how good we are at managing money.....Meanwhile people are struggling to pay their bills with no help from the Conservatives!!!

Yes, it is. What wrongweekend also forgets is that the carbon tax hasn't been implemented yet. It's still months away. So any price increases are NOT due to the carbon tax. But why shoot all the ammo in one go?  Wink

In the United States we are an example that you can tackle climate change issues without having a carbon tax and also still keeping energy and petrol prices very low.

My energy bill in the United States to power a 5 bedroom house which is 20% bigger than what I had in Melbourne is about 60% of the cost.

I also only pay 88c per litre for petrol.

No American airline has a carbon levy.

Yet still climate change is being addressed in the USA.

Don't let people tell you the carbon tax is necessary. It isn't!

So presumably when PM Abbott repeals the mining and carbon taxes, he will legislate that these costs will be returned.
But hang on if there's no cut to company tax plus an extra levy for maternity leave which btw is apparently a promise not an aspiration like the disability insurance scheme then they will have to keep most if not all of that $6.
So how much are you going to be better off?

Smithy, everyday ordinary families like mine which are up and down Australia - under Labor's plan will receive $3 in tax cuts and an increase in cost of living running into the thousands.

Tell me how that is something to be applauded?

What about middle Australia?
Why again are we being asked to bear the burden?
Abbott repealing this tax is a GOOD THING for those of us who are neither rich nor poor.

The US is about a decade away from an energy crisis ... white elephant electricity infrastructure and not enough time to replace it, even with dirty methods.

You don't half have some nerve though Buzz.

If you want to live a certain way with the ecology and environmentalism - then do so.

The issue I have is - why do you want to try and enforce it onto me and how I live?

Stop trying to tell people like me how to live if I want to fly in planes, drive a 5 liter car and run my air con all day.

an OBVIOUS response ...

Could you contain the "fruits" of your irresponsible, self indugent lifestyle to your OWN "world" - I wouldn't have an issue

But you CAN'T

When you infect your OWN world with exessive carbon emissions - you infect EVERYONE'S

The Earth has but ONE atmosphere
It belongs to ALL of us
It's care is the RESPONSIBILITY of all of us

But you raise an interesting point ...
As the most "frequent flyers" - with the BIGGEST houses, the BIGGEST cars and the BIGGEST air-cons - "the rich" create the BIGGEST emission outputs and are, hence, the BIGGEST drivers of climate change

It is only fair that they should be the demographic that pays slightly more in the carbon pricing compensation arrangements

They CAN pay
They SHOULD pay
They WILL pay
