The title of this thread is inaccurate.

Asylum seekers are not "illegals".

True, they call them irregular boat people now.
But they have only been called this since these boats became regular..

They were never illegal.

The Migration Act 1958 allows for entry into Australia without a visa for the purpose of seeking asylum.

"The Immigration Minister Senator Chris Evans last year acknowledged this by ordering that the term
‘unauthorised arrivals’ and ‘suspected illegal entry vessels’ be replaced with ‘irregular maritime arrivals’ in all
official government documents."

Illegal infers they have committed an offence under Australian law and as such can be prosecuted as a criminal......This is not the case so using the term illegal is completely wrong when referring to asylum seekers who have broken no laws in this country!!!

I am a bit over the word Illegal as well...

yes they are illegal they come in the back door they have paid a criminal to get here by sneaking in..

as far as I am concerned it is illegal to enter my home uninvited...so why not my country..

people chose to jump on the word illegal because it saves them facing the real truth..

why are we protecting our borders?? if its not to stop illegals people coming in???????????

get over yourself.. they are illegal until they have proved they are seeking asylum not the other way round..

otherwise we wouldnt have all these detention centres that seem to be multiplying off aof a sudden...

stop twisting things.

The Migration Act 1958

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees (1951)

These all make it legal.

Whole journalistic article by Gemma Jones is full of Misinformation. Beware of the Heartless. Shame her article didnt include that Surely it’s better value for money to invest on a once-off basis less than $10,000 per family housing asylum seekers in the community- than to spend each year a minimum of $70,00 as a detainee !

Asylum seekers have broken no laws and are not illegal.....What you think has no basis in law or fact....It is you who is twisting things to suit your completely wrong opinion.....I did not make the laws I just understand them a lot better than you.....opinions prove nothing and are what twists the truth into something foul and irrelevant.....It is better to stick to the truth in all things and debate the facts not irrelevant distortions IMO!!!

Only a brainless incompetent product of the union chookhouse like Miss Gillard could have any trouble quickly stopping the flood of illegal middle eastern bludgers invading Australia via Indonesia to get their welfare for life paid for by the few Australian tax payers left.

If ALP has the numbers in the lower house and Prime Minister Bob Brown of the Communist Greens has the numbers in the upper house then what is stopping the ALP and Uncle Bob from putting through whatever stop the boats scheme they choose to ?

Why don't the ALP get Uncle Bob to agree to pass their dream scheme through the upper house ?

Uncle Bob is the ALP's partner in crime so surely Uncle Bob is the one to blame for the ALP not being able to get their ideas through ?
