A site of misquotes. great. Have the deniers lowered themselves to this.

Two simple questions to the deniers:

1) If a 0.5 degree change in sea temperatures off Australia's east coast changes our whether patterns form drought 2+ years ago, to very bad flooding, dont you think our weather is very suseptable to changes in temperature ?

2) Where do you think all this co2 which was previously trapped safely underground (as coal and oil) is going once we burn it ?

I think it was that Mexican dude El Nino that has done it. Smiley

Changes to weather over such a short period of time are just that: weather.

Climate and weather are not the same thing.

This fact seems to escape many of the AGW hypothesis disciples.

Escape you. Weather is day to day events like rain, sun, fog.
Climate is much longer trends in decades, centuries, etc.  All the world is relatively stable w.r.t climate (pre global warming), except for Australia's east coast (and South America's west coast), who go through this mini-climate change due to changes in pacific current called "El Nino, and La Nina".

A fantastic example of the effect of temperature (climate) on weather is being seen right now.

So we're likely to see big droughts and big deluges or more extreme variability with climate change?

As has been said by most scientists, its difficult to know exactly where and by how much things will change.  If they knew that, they'd be buying up all the land that has minimal impact.

Climate change will impact the ocean currents, which will impact the land climate.  A classic example of this is good old Al Gore's movie about northern hemisphere freeze in Europe, because the warm current that comes up the atlantic stops due to global warming.  (ie warming causing localised cooling*).

* - This always gets the deniers in a tis.
Grin

If La Nina becomes the predominant pattern, then we will see a lot more floods etc. If El Nino does, we will be in longer droughts.

The warm current in question is the Gulfstream and the problem with this is that in March 2010 Jim Willis from NASA said it was not slowing down and this "colder than normal Northern Hemisphere winter was "probably part of a natural cycle"
Also in March of that year has NASA saying the Gulfstream is actually speeding up by 20%. (Geophysical Research Letters, March 2010)
However by December it was a mid Atlantic High pressure system had moved the current more north making Canada and Greenland warmer but colder for Europe.
So it is a rather "movable" feast of "facts".

So and to the El Nino and La Nina events off the east coast of Australia, these are a very similar senario to that of the east coast of Australia circa late 1800's and culminating in the Federation drought. Much bigger and more widespread floods and droughts than now...
This would indicate that there is nothing new here regarding recent well publicised and attributed weather events.

Of course.  You do realise we havent really seen the effects of global warming yet. The first I've heard of any very noticable changes in climate isnt due until 2050.

What I am saying is La Nina and El Nino are a good taste of how dramatic weather can change with only 0.5 degrees of warming, and by 2100 we'll have 2 degrees.

Something to look forward too.

Yeah - That's what the regional predictions show. Some areas will be much drier while some areas will be wetter. A lot depends on factors such as changing Ocean currents.

Mostly referred to in Chapter 11. I already gave you the example of Arctic meltwater disrupting the North Atlantic Drift. That is one example of a consequence of Global Warming. Of course there are others.

It doesn't seem like pseudo science, especially since that particular prediction looks like it's had some effect on Northern European winters in the past three years at least.

If you're going to argue against something, maybe you should make some effort to find out what you're arguing against.

That would be fine if it actually happened, but it is not happening, so what is the point of stating said science if it were only used in a pseudo fashion.

What is happening however is a jetstream that has a convoluted shape, instead of a straight west to east movement. This is allowing for cold air to drift south, causing extreme weather and predicted by weatheraction. Nothing like what you or Jolly have stated.

Wow your pseudo science gets even better. Not only is temperature, climate to you, but natural ocean currents is now global warming affects.

Fascinating. Tell us more of your pseudo science. Give us all the peer reviewed material about this science you speak of.

Is weatheraction another one of your denier blogs selling moonshine to those desperately looking for alternative explanations ?

No, <deleted diversion tactic>

Do you believe the predictions of weatheraction are anything more than pot luck ?
Peer review suggests not.

I take it you dont want to defend the weatheraction nutter ?

A bit sensitive to review of  your nutty breatheran ?

Some pretty scathing reviews of his work...

"Forecasts prepared by Weather Action would repay further attention. The results provide little evidence to dismiss the observed success rates as being attributable to mere chance or good fortune. Indeed the balance of evidence indicates that the system performs better than chance although it is recognized that the margin of success differs greatly between the seasons and is lowest in winter when gales are most frequent."

Seems at best he can predict "seasons".  Well done.

I don't have to review weather action. Weather action is doing longer term predictions than anyone and weather is complex and (opperative word) unpredictable. But with the complexity and unpredictablity, long term, weather action still mange to get better than chance results.

Go ask the MET office to give long term predictions and see what you get.

Me thinks you have no idea of all the forces at work that can change the weather at any given time. Better thance chance results means there is something there that weather action is doing right. What was it that you found with the MET office results or even climate change results. lol Weather action is even better than the climate change church. What is the results of MET, better than chance or no chance at all of getting anything right.

Thats why you get shown up so much. I doubt you even bother to do any backgroup checks on your supposed sources of truth (which end up being nutty bloggers like this baby)

I doubt the MET office bother to publish predictions like " it will be hot in summer, and cold in winter". That's about all your mate got right.

Rather than dig yourself a bigger hole, just admin that quoting weatheraction was a mistake. I simple mistake brought about by inexperience, but a mistake all the same. Learn from it. Then we can all move on to discrediting your next nutter.

So the MET office cant do long term prediction with better than chance outcomes hey. That is because they dont know what they are doing.

They cant even give a 5 day prediction without it being a failure, let alone 6 months out like weather action and better than chance.

They have pretty unpredictable weather in the UK.  I daresay that taking tea leaf readings could be more accurate than the MET Office when it comes to long range forecasts - but only on the odd occasion. Of course you could always reverse engineer the predictions database and remove those that were inconveniently....wrong.

I'd be interested to hear how Piers Corbyn predicts long term weather. I wonder if it involves seaweed.

Another method involves examining the rings on a woolly bear caterpillar to predict the severity of winter. If the caterpillar has two black rings, one at each end, then it is said the winter will harsh in the beginning and at the end, but the middle of winter will be mild. Trouble is I'm fresh out of woolly bear caterpillars.

I was going for a walk one night and saw a lunar eclipse. An acquaintance noticed me looking at the moon and asked "Is that a sign of bad weather?" I said, "- actually, keep this to yourself but I think it's a sign of the Earth's shadow  getting in the way of sunlight reaching the moon - but please don't tell anybody. You know how people hate rationalists these days"

A red sky at night is a sailor's delight. A red sky in the morning means you've been up all night drinking.

Maybe the aborigines know a thing or 2.

I hadn't taken much notice of the aborigines barometer, the black cockatoo, but after I saw a dozen a couple of weeks ago, we had a week and a half worth of rain starting the next day.

Then I remembered back on the days that the birds were pointed out to me and they had been pretty much spot on each time.

Weirder things have happened than reading seaweed.

Yeah, when I was up at the Granites a few years ago, I was talking to this Aboriginal Elder. He had a knack for predicting the weather. I asked him every day for a week and he replied "Hot and dry". He was spot on. It was uncanny. Then, the following week, I caught up with him just before breakfast and asked him the same question.

- Dunno mate
- Why's that?
- Haven't seen the forecast yet.

Damn these Jet streams. They have a personality of their own. There it goes drifting South without anything else causing that to happen, and the result is bedlam in Europe.
