A change in our constitution needed desperately
Feb 11th, 2012 at 1:09am

This being, that a candidate should remain with the party he represented during the election.

This metamorphous-ing to independent or turncoat-ing is just not fair to his colleagues nor constituents.

Alternatively, he should pay for his own bi-election - give his area the option to re-elect him on his change of sides.

Why haven't our dumb politicians worked this out long ago?

Wish that I was younger or stronger so that I could make a few changes.

Boring facts ...

The Australian Constitution makes no mention of political parties, the position of Prime Minister, or the Cabinet. And, there's no rule that says the Prime Minister must be a member of the House of Representatives.

All I'm seeing here Olde is you chucking a tantrum because it was the Libs who lost an MP, and not the Government.

Shows that I'm not versed in every part of the constitution but also, its weaknesses!

No wonder there is so much unrest and misbehaviour  among those we trust.

As you seem to know so much, you should recognise the truth in what I write--

unless, of course, you are a confirmed leftard in case I shouldn't even be responding to you.

Really?

I don't think that the Coalition would be happy to accept any turncoat - for a start, they would be as trustworthy as marital cheats.

I remember Don Chipp getting the sulks and forming Australian Democrats.

That hadn't impressed me in the least!

Cheryl Kernot was lured by the Labor Party and lost out in the process.

Let me reiterate, that if one wins a seat standing for a party, they have an obligation to remain in that party until the following election or, if they resign without good reason, pay for a bi-election.

If that rule doesn't belong in the constitution then it has to be enshrined in protocol.

Voters have to be respected.

Naturally, as you are not a conservative, this will sail over your head!
me.

Some of the changes we need in federal politics is an end to tax payer funded superannuation, doubling of salaries, yearly published performance appraisals from an independant auditor and fixed 4 yr terms.

I rather like the 3 year terms but another year of Julia would be a good thing in my opinion compared to the other option.

Fixed terms may have put the opposition in the position of trying to make decisions for the benefit of Australia instead of focusing on making mischief and creating instability on any possible issue.

The poor behaviour of the current opposition has been a disgrace.

This is a double edged sword - it infers that the party should also not be able to throw out a member, not sure they would like that very much.

Really?

How about JuLIAR's behaviour, the lies, the broken promises?

Take off your blindfold, mate!

Three years is to short ..I couldnt stand Howard and the thought of Abbott running the country makes me dry reach but if the majority of the people vote someone in they should be given a fair chance to govern. And a fixed four year term is a much better time span to impliment the changes the voters voted for. It also gives people a chance to see the results of those changes and I also think two four year terms is long enough for anyone..after that they should nick off.

What? Today, a party can't throw out a member for bad behaviour?

Not even if that member is being investigated by the police as is today's pelican, Craig Thompson?
