Tell us your favourite movie and why?
Feb 2nd, 2012 at 8:06am

Tell us what your favourite movie is and give a short breakdown on why it sits at NO1# on your list. This could be good!

My personal favourite is 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre'.

Starring Humphrey Bogart, it explorers the depths of men's souls.

Basically Bogart is broke and wins a small lottery, enough to get gold prospecting supplies. He and some shifty acquaintances set out to find their fortune.

Was an still is the most insightful movie into the motives of greed that drives people I have ever seen.

It's really difficult to think of a favourite movie.. I think if I have to choose one... I would choose...Donnie Darko. I think it's a great way to show that people have 2 minds... and if you watch the movie for the first time it's also very surprising. It makes me think as well about the possibility of time traveling.

Well, I love "Pretty Woman." Its a romantic movie, and it shows love in a different light. It has a unique story, and I just think it has an amazing plot and characters. I also love Julia Roberts, so that helps. Smiley

"The Notebook" is great too. It has a great message, and it always makes me cry. I love Rachel McAdams, and she's my favorite actress. I can watch that movie over and over again.

One more that's amazing is The Mummy. The first one is the best. It has action, adventure, and romance. It kick ***! Cheesy So those are my top 3!

So many different genres it's a bit of a lottery to pick the best. Offhand the brain spits out :

The Shawshank Redemption,

Being there,

Dr. Strangelove.

Strange that two of those have Peter Sellers in the lead. I wouldn't have thought he was my favourite actor.

Going Home was great Smiley

and Land and Freedom AND

Salt of the Earth

I liked Gladiator, firstly because of the music. The theme music is difficult to get out of your head. They really tried to get it as historically accurate as possible from the point of view of costumes and customs. Of course the actual history was totally wrong, but it didn't actually matter too much. It was credible. I'm involved in ancient re-enactments, and some of the people I know were involved in the filming, which is good, because they have been researching and improving for years.
...
Unlike many other films of this genre, there were not too many gaffes or anachronisms.  The only two I noticed were the turbans in Carthage (They didn't wear turbans) and the use of a crossbow, which hadn't been invented. My Italian friends noticed a few others, but they were minor.

The barbarity and corruption of the Roman empire came across pretty well,  and some of the scenes were extremely evocative. The part where Maximus walks through a field of wheat with his hands running through the wheat ears evoke the Roman belief in the Elysium fields. (so what if the wheat was too short for the time?)   The film started and finished like that. Because I understood the symbolism,  it was one of these spine tingling moments.

Do you get to the Abbey festival? I've never been before, but I'm considering taking the kids up in July.

Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels (for comedy)
Enemy at the Gates (for suspense)
Natural Born Killers
Pulp Fiction
Ronin
The Shining (has to be Jack)
The Notebook
Grease (has to be the original - for singalongs)
An Affair to Remember (for making me cry)

The Villiage
Come and See - a Russian WW2 movie.... horrific stuff, but beautiful to watch.

Anything Jean Reno is good. There was a great one where his wife was dying and she wanted the last spare grave in the village, so he has to stop everyone else dying before she does. Brilliant movie.

I like Vince Cassel too.

Very perceptive.
Although, not a case of "don't like".... just don't rate them highly - and in the case of Grease, I've never seen it.

He really was a terrible player.

How the hell he played for decent sides like Leeds and Sheffield United I will never know.

That Wimbledon side that won the FA Cup were a bunch of thugs too as well - John Fashanu knew when to leave the elbow in going up for a ball, Lawrie Sanchez wasn't shy in the tackle and Alan Cork also made no attempt for the ball on numerous occasions.

Amelie
The Arsenal Stadium Mystery
The Artist
The Black Camel
The Bride came COD
Brief Encounter
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Charade
Chicago
City Lights
The Cocoanuts
The Great Dictator
Green for Danger
The Guv'nor
A King in New York
Limelight
The Maltese Falcon (1931)
Mamma Mia
Mon Oncle
Monsieur Hulot's Holiday
Mrs Henderson Presents
My Learned Friend
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Oh Mr Porter!
Pane, Amore e Fantasia
The Punch and Judy Man
Rain

Il Turco Napoletano
Les Visiteurs

Not enough room left to say why they are my favourites......

After reflection, and with respect to the title of this thread....

If i could only choose one movie, at this time, it would probably have to be the LOTR trilogy.

Because imo, LOTR was such a very large and difficult project, and yet, Peter Jackson succeeded in doing a superb job, in the 'execution' of [i.e. making it] the story, of putting it 'on film', for all time, for us all.

I'm not really a huge fan of Bogart, but I do have a DVD of Casablanca and of The Maltese Falcon (although I prefer the earlier Ricardo Cortez version, which I also have), The African Queen and Up the River.

Mention of Casablanca reminds me of one film I left off my list: Conrad Veidt's The Spy in Black.

It's hard to pick just one movie but if I had to it would be Notting Hill.
- it's such a feelgood movie
- Julia Roberts is just so gorgeous in it
- there is a lot of good humour in it
- it's probably Hugh Grant's best movie
- I've probably watched it more times than anything else, although not for about a year

Master and Commander
Gladiator
Cinderella Man
(Yes I think RC can act, I could have chucked in Romper Stomper and American Gangster as well, but 5 RC films seemed a bit OTT.)
The Big Lebowski
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Lives Of Others (German)
Captains Courageous
A Night At The Opera
Go West
The Big Store
Planes Trains and Automobiles
TED
Wristcutters A Love Story
The Tao Of Steve
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs

It seems I could go on forever, I LOVE movies, and have thousands of faves, but that is a few of the top of my head.

- Julia Roberts is just so gorgeous in it
- there is a lot of good humour in it
- it's probably Hugh Grant's best movie
- I've probably watched it more times than anything else, although not for about a year

One of my favourite battle scenes in film. The invincibility of truth.

Inherit the Wind.

The original version with Spencer Tracey and Federic Marsh. Gene Kelly steals the show as a cynical journo (is there any other type?) who has some wonderful lines.

It is based on the true story of the Tennessee monkey trial, where a teacher was charged with teaching evolution as well as creation in a small-minded, insular southern community.

At one stage Kelly is asked by a local: "Do you want a nice, clean place to stay?"

He replies:"I had one, madam, but I left it to come here.".

There are nice cameo roles by Harry Morgan (Colonel Potter in MASH) who plays a frequently confused judge as Tracey and Marsh snipe at each other) and Dick York (Darrin in Bewitched) as the teacher who is a pawn in an ideological game.

Great and little known movie definitely worth seeking out.

God grant me the patience to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and, above all, the wisdom to tell the difference.
