Rising Indigenous Juvenile Detention Rates
Feb 1st, 2012 at 7:25am

An alarming increase in the number of Indigenous youth in detention should be a wake-up call for the Government to urgently implement policies to address Indigenous overrepresentation in our criminal justice system, the Greens said today.

Numbers in the Productivity Commission’s report on Government services released today show that juvenile detention rates for Indigenous people between 10 and 17 years of age increased by more than 20 per cent in 2009-2010 compared to the previous year, Greens spokesperson for legal affairs, Senator Penny Wright, said.

“The high rate of Indigenous young people in detention is a tragedy,” Senator Wright said. “It deprives Indigenous communities of the hope and potential that young people represent.

“This report shows that Indigenous detention rates are not decreasing, in fact, they are worsening. “High levels of incarceration are both a symptom and cause of Indigenous disadvantage.

“All levels of government must commit to reform which will rapidly reduce imprisonment rates.

“As a first step, COAG must urgently agree to ‘Closing the Gap’ targets to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system.

“The Greens also call on the Federal Government to implement justice reinvestment policies, a proven approach for redirecting funds away from imprisonment costs towards localised programs and services which address the underlying causes of crime and disadvantage.”

If there was only something that the youth could do themselves to stop going to prison.

Sorry I can't think of anything that indigenous youth would be willing to do, to stop being sent to prison.

Maybe if their 'parents' would stop teaching their kiddlies to hate whitey and to portray themselves as perpetual victims, they might make something of themselves.  Fat chance of that happening.

I love how every comment reagding a racial minority group, no matter how mild or how truthful must always be tempered with a jab at whites.

You might want to point out that while abos only make up 3% of the population, they make up 25% of the prison population.

These types of discussions really irk me because I don't see much empathy on our part.
It's all well and good to say "sorry", but I really don't think that we know what we are saying sorry for.

"Sorry that you have to fit into our world, which we haven't quite worked out as yet, but when we do we'll let you know how to conduct yourselves. Until then, we'll put you in jail (more aptly, gaol).

Yes we are sorry that a multitude of Aboriginals were slaughtered at the hands of our ancestors because their POV didn't align with our ideals.
Nowadays, sorry or not, aboriginals must align with our POV to avoid being slaughtered by a system which is in fact slaughtering many Caucasian ideals as well.

Keep pressing, because we Caucasians and the (A)aboriginals will align as one. One day, we'll show you what real alignment is all about.

P.S. It's interesting that I need use a capital "C" for Caucasian, where "aboriginal" requires only a lower case.
That's just the pathetic society that we live in atm.

Similar in other countries ... since policing, governing and media coverage are usually racially based to being more pro pink skinned.

How many Aboriginals die in police custody to pink skins?

And so do pink skins ... yet the police and prosecution are usually cousin pink skins and so let them off lightly.

Look at the witch hunt aimed at O'Shane

Last I read abos, have half the rate of deaths in custody to non-abos, but you don't hear too much about white deaths, not as news worthy as the black ones.

As far as news coverage you might want to re-consider their bias in reporting crimes, they really hate pointing out the race of the person if they're black, at least in this part of the planet.

The judiciary doesn't like throwing abos in gaol either, makes 'em look bad.

There is definitely a bias, but not in the way you're trying to make it.
