There’s no escaping racism in India

I just read a Bangalore newspaper headline announcing that the government would take stern action against pubs that discriminate against African nationals. Good for the Chief Minister who said this in no uncertain terms.

Racism, prejudice and xenophobia are rampant in India. It’s a strange mixture of prejudice, ignorance and centuries-old discriminatory practices, when communities kept to themselves and there were dining taboos based on caste. You couldn’t eat with people not of your caste or marry into their communities.

A lot of our migrants come from India. We also export a number of jobs to India. By these two acts are we tacitly approving India's racism?

Some of our alleged refugees and asylum shoppers started life in Sudan.

Quote:
Racism in Sudan

The name Sudan comes from “bilad al sudan”: Arabic for “the land of the blacks.”

So you might expect Sudanese to be comfortable with the color of their skin. But they’re not.

“They are equating black with dullness, so a black person is stupid, automatically a slave,” says southerner Agnes Silver Nyarsuk. She explains that Southern Sudanese consider themselves black, while northerners see themselves as Arabs — and treat blacks as second class.

“For transport, an Arab lady when she enters, the men will stand up and give the place, for an Arab lady, because she’s a woman,” Nyarsuk says. “But a black lady, even if she is old, and she’s shivering, dying, they will not respect because you are automatically a slave.”

We will never rid ourselves of the racist tag if we continue to make Australia a destination for racists.

Parenthetically, racism in many parts of the world predates European history in Australia (1788) by thousands of years.

Aren't I the lucky one?

But not so - all of us have seen or been involved in racism.  Perhaps your definition of racism differs from mine.??

Please enlighten me.!! Cool

Ok, you state that you're 'a bit racist' because you object to a cultural practice...i.e genital mutilation...

Dislike or even hatred of a culture or practice by a certain group within a racial group is not, by any means, racist....

Even dislike/hatred based on religion is not racism..(despite the 'current' ruling by the UN and various governments)....At worst it's bigotry, at best it's bias...

Racism is a belief that one group, based on skin colour, is better or worse than another, disliking a certain practice that is carried out by people of several races within one particular geographic area, but that is not carried out by the same races outside of that area is not, and cannot be racist.....

Racism is a term that is thrown around so much, and so incorrectly these days that is rapidly losing all meaning..

HERALD Sun readers have overwhelmingly endorsed the claim by one of Australia's most respected neurosurgeons that racism still plagues the nation.

Dr Charles Teo, the son of Chinese immigrants, who prolonged the life of Jane McGrath and has saved the lives of hundreds of Australians, said it was wrong to deny there was racism in Australia.

At a launch of Australia Day Council celebrations yesterday, Dr Teo said that racism was still "very much alive in Australia".

"I don't quite like it when I hear politicians reassuring the Indians that there's no racism in Australia. That's bull-----," he said.

A Herald Sun poll on the issue has drawn an emphatic response from readers, with more that 83 per cent of 8257 respondents thus far agreeing that racism is still prevalent.

Former premier Jeff Kennett, former Australian Medical Association president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, singer Kamahl and ex-police commissioner Christine Nixon have all said that racism exists.

But Premier Ted Baillieu said he did not think Australia was a racist country.

Racism does exist but there are different levels of it depending on where you go in the country.
I reckon all countries around the world are pretty much the same but because we have a successful multicultural society we can talk about it honestly and our worst racist elements are quickly howled down when they rear their ugly heads.
Being a part of a multicultural family I can pick a racist at 100 yards these days...they stand out like dogs testies.

The subject of racism is not taboo in this country like it is in countries like Japan and China to name just a few.
I have no problem discussing multiculturalism or racism with anyone and I find that to be true of most of the people I know.

Oh sure you can talk about racism all you like, provided you condemn it at every opportunity.
But openly discussing race has been strictly verboten for a long time.

Private conversations between friends and associates are very different to what can be publicly stated or discussed.

yes,  but only to reinforce that no mention of race is acceptable, ever.

eg. Tiger woods former caddy hauled over hot coals for 'racist' comment - referred to him as a "black asshole".  But it wasn't the "asshole" bit that was controversial - everyone was saying that a year or so ago when he got caught with all those women - it was that he said "black".

Some clowns put boot polish on their faces to do a skit on hey hey it's saturday.  Cries of "RACISM" echoed for weeks.  What the?  How the?

Free and open?  Pttooooey!

Gizmo wrote,Racism is a belief that one group, based on skin colour, is better or worse than another

Now that is the same type of narrow, and anachronistic definition of racism, which is employed by many racists, to declare their bigotry is not racist at all.

I remember going over this issue a lot with Beowulf, in the past, where I provided links to definitions where the term race is now considered to include both National, and Cultural groupings, and even to some extent, Religious groupings, where the religion also has a strong cultural association attached to it.

It seems patently absurd to me to hear someone denigrate someone from a different Nationality, but then go on to claim, that because that person is not from an 18th century "Negroid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid" narrow racial criteria, separate from himself, then he can claim his bigoted remarks are not racially based, when they so obviously are.

Racism should not be condoned, or encouraged, wherever it occurs, but nor should we get so precious about it that any minor infraction sees a full blown witch hunt ensue.
